Twelve Days of Rarepairs: Lydira | Lydia Martin x Kira Yukimura (Teen Wolf)

“Ow, ow — ow! Okay, you can hear me saying ow, right?” Lydia snaps at the nurse. She immediately regrets it, which she shows when she guiltily lies back down and stops trying to fight. “Sorry.”
The nurse just gives her a tight-lipped smile as she finishes elevating her ankle. “Take two of those paracetamols in an hour, and then you’re free to go. Someone will bring your crutches along for you in just a minute.”
Lydia smiles back, trying to look grateful, and says nothing else. For the best, because she’s in so much pain that being polite is proving difficult at the moment. Being alone would be smarter until it dies down.
The nurse then turns to Kira, talking to them both as she says, “It’ll be hard to do certain things for about six weeks; you won’t be able to work but I’m sure you probably won’t be until after the holidays anyway, so that’s good. And it’s best if you stay off of it as much as you can, so remember to let your wife help you out. No strenuous activities of any kind — heavy lifting, standing for too long, sex, etc.”
Lydia blinks, trying her hardest not to look taken aback. When she glances at Kira to see how she’s taking this, she’s surprised to find her barely reacting. Her eyes are a little big but other than that, she’s nodding along like this is all perfectly normal.
“The last one’s more of a precaution — safe than sorry. But the cast will stay on for about six weeks, we’ll bring you back in and see how it’s healing, and we’ll decide if it needs to stay on for longer.”
She hands Kira a slip of paper. “A prescription for paracetamol, take that into a pharmacy. She’s to take two a day or as needed.”
Kira’s still nodding along and agreeing until the nurse finally leaves them alone, saying again that someone will bring the crutches along. Free to do so without being questioned, Lydia fixes her with a stare and raises her eyebrows.
“My wife?” Lydia questions bluntly.
Kira looks up at her, surprised — oh, so it’s a surprise when she says it but not when the nurse does.
“What?” Kira says, not quite registering it, and then, “Oh! Uh, yeah, sorry. It’s just, when checking you in, they were saying I couldn’t come in unless I was family and they assumed I was your wife, so I just kind of… agreed? Is that okay? I didn’t want you to be alone.”
Lydia’s stomach flips and flops and she thinks about how she hasn’t eaten anything since the breakfast that she and Kira had at the diner. She’s probably feeling all weird because she’s hungry and hasn’t had any water recently.
Nice, calm, and collected, Lydia casually looks to her bedside table for a bottle, conveniently taking her gaze away from Kira as she says, “I guess that makes sense. Thanks.”
She doesn’t find any water on the table, only two paracetamol.
“Oh — here.” Kira’s holding out a bottle of water. “I got it from the cafeteria. Thought you might need a drink for the painkillers.”
Lydia gratefully takes it from her and uncaps it to take a drink before attempting to swallow down the painkillers. She’s always hated taking medication, the way they rub her throat and the constant fear that she’ll choke on them.
Right now, though, she’s glad to not have to say anything because as much as she played it nice, calm, and collected, her mind is still stuck on wife. The hospital just assumed they were married?
It’s not the most far-fetched idea. But do they look that much like a couple? Maybe it was just because Lydia was leaning on Kira when they came in. And while they were waiting to be seen. But her ankle was in agony, anyone would need a little bit of support!
Kira agreed. Kira told them that they were right, that Lydia is her wife. What would that even be like?
Lydia has all of these thoughts in the space of the time it takes her to take the first painkiller. As she’s taking the second, Kira takes the opportunity of her inability to reply right away to begin rambling.
“So, when they bring your crutches, we can sign you out and I’ll drive you back to my house. Is that okay? I can take you back to yours if you prefer, but it’s Christmas Eve and I would feel bad if you were spending it alone because you can’t really go anywhere. And my parents are cooking a really nice dinner that I think you’d like — that’s only if you want to, of course, I just—“
Lydia finally manages to swallow the painkiller and interrupt her. “You really don’t have to do that. I’ll be fine on my own, I promise. I’m not intruding on your Christmas Eve.”
“Exactly,” Kira says, confusing Lydia until she adds, “you’re not intruding. I’m inviting you. And it’s not a pity invite.”
“Would you have invited me if I hadn’t hurt my ankle?”
Without even hesitating, Kira nods. “Absolutely. I was going to when we were walking back from the diner, but then you started messing about on the ice and I got distracted, and then you fell, so I just never got the chance.”
That… sounds reasonably believable. It could be total bullshit but Lydia knows that Kira isn’t in the habit of lying to her. She easily could, she has a scarily convincing poker face. But she doesn’t think that’s what’s happening right now.
“It’s pity because you feel bad about my ankle?” Lydia repeats.
“Not even a little,” Kira agrees. “Really, I don’t feel bad about your ankle. I told you not to go on it and you did anyway, so, it’s entirely your fault.”
Lydia snorts. Kira smiles like she won a small victory.
“You’re right, it was on me.” She thinks about her silent, empty house awaiting her. “If you’re sure it’s not a problem, then I’d be happy to spend Christmas Eve with you. I can just text my mom and let her know to pick me up from your house tomorrow instead.”
“You can always stay with us for Christmas as well if she isn’t back in town in time,” Kira casually suggests.
“Very generous of you, as my wife and all,” Lydia jokes. She takes another drink of the water then offers it back to Kira.
“I panicked!” Kira laughs, taking the bottle. “They asked if I was your partner, and I just said yes so that I could come in with you.”
“And now the nurse is advising us against strenuous activities for six weeks,” Lydia says dryly, smirking a little when Kira nearly chokes on the water. “Such a shame, I was looking forward to Christmas night.”
Kira rolls her eyes and caps the bottle. Her hair falls in front of her face as she puts it away in her bag, but Lydia still notices the warm pink tint rising to her cheeks.
“I think if we were really careful…” she trails off and fixes Kira with a suggestive look simply for a reaction.
“Maybe in six weeks,” Kira jokes.
That’s not the reaction she was expecting. She’ll take it, though.
“Hm. I’ll hold you to that,” Lydia jokes back. The painkiller’s are definitely kicking in; for one, her pain is disappearing, and two, she’s getting drowsy. “I wonder when they’ll bring those crutches. I wanna get out of this place.”
“I’ll go check.”
Kira gets up, leaving the magazine on the chair. She goes to leave but Lydia catches her hand, stopping her. When Kira looks back at her, expecting her to ask for something, Lydia simply smiles.
“Thank you,” she says softly, sincerely. “For being so nice. I really appreciate it.”
Kira smiles back, all soft and pretty, and Lydia’s heart nearly stops. “I’m happy to. Just try not to hurt yourself again while I’m away, okay?”
“Well, there’s no ice here, so that should be easy.”
“You’re literally a professional ice skater part-time and you broke your ankle on ice,” Kira says, fondly exasperated, shaking her head.
Lydia shrugs, definitely feeling the drowsiness now, and says, “I live to impress and amaze.”
Kira’s smile grows. She leans down and presses a light kiss to Lydia’s forehead, making her heart flutter about even wilder.
“You always do,” Kira replies. Then she squeezes Lydia’s hand gently before going off to find the nurse with the crutches.
