Ambushed at the Soireè

This is a fill for today’s @flashfictionfridayofficial  prompt [#FFF 345 Lush Life].  I do plan on expanding, but ran out of time for the moment.

Fandom: MCU/Marvel Pairing: Tony Stark/Ty Stone  Rating: General Tags: No Powers AU, Established Relationship, Manipulation, Marriage Proposal Tags:  During a party meant to celebrate a business success, Tony gets ambushed by a surprise marriage proposal.  Word Count:   220

“To Lush life!”  The crowd around them enthusiastically repeated Ty’s words while he clanked his champagne flute against Tony’s so hard that he expected them to shatter.  The party was intended to celebrate Lush: a line of luxury consumer electronics that was Stone Enterprises’ latest venture. But Tony had an unsettling premonition that Ty had something else planned as well. 

Sure enough, once the toasting had subsided, Ty waved his hands to get everyone’s attention. then dramatically dropped to one knee in front of Tony.  “What do you say, babe?  Want to marry an up and coming billionaire?” 

The breath caught in Tony’s throat - and not in a good way.  They’d been dating for less than a year,  and he’d seen enough of Ty’s dark side to know that things weren’t going to work out long term.  It just figured that Ty would pull a stunt like this, proposing in front of so many important people and backing Tony into a corner. 

“Oh Ty,” he found himself replying with a camera-ready smile,  “I just don’t deserve you.” 

“Well, who does?” Ty laughed,  “but I’m asking you anyway.”  He took Tony’s hand and slipped the ring on it without waiting for an answer.   The crowd clapped and cheered as Tony’s heart plummeted. How was he going to get out of this?

New York has changed but, simultaneously, it’s still the same in all the ways that count; everyone’s always in a hurry, bustling about hectically, smells from all kinds of foreign places waft around the food carts decorating the streets, the subways are packed and people are laughing, talking and yelling in every language imaginable.

What’s different is Steve, or more the somewhat shocking discovery that he has gone and gotten himself a kid.

Anthony Edward Stark.

Tony’s Howard’s son, but Bucky wouldn’t have guessed if he hadn’t known, what with the way Steve is with Tony, treats him, acts around him. Steve has adopted himself a stray and it’s so typical, Bucky can’t do anything but watch and grin to himself as Steve lifts Tony right off his feet and into a bone-crushing hug, bags dropped at his sides and completely forgotten.

Every week, the same guy comes into Steve and Bucky’s diner and every week, he’s got a new date on his arm. Guy just can’t seem to catch a break, and after a particularly bad date, Steve and Bucky start taking matters into their own hands to help him out.

“I don’t like this,” Steve mutters to him, as he shifts awkwardly on his feet in the lounge of Tony Stark’s absurdly large Malibu mansion.

Bucky sighs and resists the urge to roll his eyes. This isn’t the first time (and it certainly won’t be the last) that Steve has expressed that very sentiment, and while Bucky also recognises the futility and drawbacks to this particular job, it’s a job, it’s their job and it puts money in their bank account, which is something that Bucky won’t turn his back to.

“I just don’t understand why someone like Tony Stark needs a bodyguard,” Steve complains, quietly. “Some spoilt little rich boy, so full of himself that he thinks the whole world is out to get him?”

“Shut up, or you’re going to get us fired,” Bucky hisses.

Steve shakes his head. “All I’m saying is that I don’t want to have to spend the foreseeable future looking after some dolled-up, greedy prep school reject.”

Or, alternatively, five times that Tony Stark surprised Steve and Bucky, and one time they didn’t really care.

A Seat at the Table

It was one of thoseblack-tie awards affairs, the kind of thing where the alcohol was watered downand the food was pretentious and fussy and not at all filling. Tony watchedBucky schmoozing like he’d been born to it and smiled; it had been a long, hardroad to get Bucky so comfortable in a crowd -- even now, he paused every coupleof minutes to scan the room, picking out exits and potential cover and hisdistance from Tony -- but Tony was unspeakably proud of him.

Naturally, it was duringthat moment of quiet joy that a very unwelcome voice behind him said, “Tony,darling. You look wonderful, as always.”

Tony fixed a slightlyplastic smile on his face and turned to greet Ty, because Pepper would kill himif he made a scene again. “Stone. They’ll let just anyone in here these days,won’t they?”

Ty scoffed, raising aglass to Tony. “Seems they will,” he said. “But you know it was never personal.It’s simply a matter of money. If they were judging based on personality,or competence, well, you wouldn’t have a seat at the table, would you?You do look pretty, though. As long as you’re not, well, talking.” Ty reachedout and patted Tony on the cheek, rubbing his thumb at the corner of Tony’smouth knowingly.

Tony jerked his headaway, his smile curling into a snarl. “Well, it hasn’t been fun. Let’s never doit again.” He turned away, twisting past a waiter and around a bank ofexcessively leafy plants, seething. God, Ty was such an ass.

Tony wasn’t sure ifBucky had seen that, or if it was just his normal Acquire-Visuals-on-Tony checkthat had failed, but it didn’t take more than seventeen seconds (yes, okay, soTony was counting, sue him.) to make his way over to Tony’s cover and slide inbeside him to do his impression of casual and calm.

“Handsome fella,” Bucky commented,idly picking Ty out of the crowd with his thousand yard stare.

So Bucky had seenit. “My ex?” Tony supplied, not bothering to look. “Yeah, I’d still hit that.Except this time it would be with a car.” No, running Ty over wasn’t personalenough. “Or a baseball bat.” Better.

There went the flexingnoise of Bucky’s arm-plates shifting as he clenched a fist and the armcompensated. “I didn’t catch what he said,” Bucky admitted, as if that wassomething to be ashamed of, that he couldn’t hear a single voice out ofhundreds, nearly a dozen yards away or more. “But if he insulted ya, doll, Icould… arrange an incident.”

Just knowing Bucky hadhis back made Tony feel a thousand times better. He took a deep, cleansingbreath, and leaned in to kiss Bucky’s cheek. “They say the best revenge isliving well,” he said. “And I’m living so well, these days. We shouldhead back to the table. They’re going to present my award soon.”
