MGH Pharmacist's Local Links Aid Typhoon Disaster Relief

via Massachusetts General Hospital Giving Disaster relief comes in many forms. When Typhoon Haiyan plowed across the central Philippines in November, 2013, Massachusetts General Hospital mobilized quickly, sending four teams of medical professionals, including one pharmacist, to aid the people most affected. “I didn’t know what a pharmacist could do in a disaster,” says Mass General pharmacist Carmela Berlin, RPH, recalling the moment the hospital called for disaster relief volunteers. But she knew she wanted to go. Having grown up in Visayas, the same region of the Philippines now devastated by the typhoon, she speaks the local Ilonggo language and knows the local customs. Typhoon Haiyan Response Team from MGH Returns to Boston -- MGH Giving

via Massachusetts General Hospital Giving After treating 3,000 patients during a three-week mission to parts of the Philippines ravaged by Typhoon Haiyan, a disaster response team from Massachusetts General Hospital returned to Boston this week.  A news team from WCVB Channel 5 Boston interviewed members of the seven-person team after they arrived at Logan International Airport on Sunday, Dec. 8.  Team members described scenes of vast devastation and patients traumatized and badly in need of care.  A second disaster response team from Mass General is in the island nation now and others hospital personnel are preparing for possible deployment.  More than 400 Mass General employees have volunteered to go to the Philippines. Just over the weekend our country experienced the strongest typhoon this year called Haiyan/Yolanda. It hit the eastern/southern part of the Philippines and people there have nothing to eat, wear and not even a roof above their heads. The storm surge wiped out the entire town of San Jose Tacloban EVEN THE EVACUATION CENTERS GOT WIPED OUT AND PEOPLE WHO TOOK REFUGE THERE ARE NOW EITHER MISSING OR DEAD. This is the worst typhoon that hit us ever since typhoon Ondoy 4 years ago. DEAD BODIES LINED UP ACROSS THE STREET AND THERE'S NO ONE TO PICK THEM UP BECAUSE EVERYONE IS BUSY TRYING TO FIND FOOD FOR THEIR FAMILIES OR WHAT'S LEFT OF IT. According to the latest news, a lot of people are sending help already, but since the casualties have now reached thousands and some of the relief trucks cannot pass through some towns because of all the debris, PEOPLE ARE LOOTING FROM GROCERY STORES AND FIGHTING OVER BOTTLES OF CLEAN WATER. i didn't post about this until now because i didn't think that the damage was this huge. See, I live in the northern part of the Philippines and the typhoon didn't affect us that much but my countrymen in the south faced it head on.
