The lack of reputable, accessible keyboards for Android devices is frustrating. The ones I was curious about are either no longer being updated / are not able to be downloaded, or I can't find much reviews or documentation about them and how trustworthy they are, so I'm reluctant to download them. Privacy is a big concern with all AAC and communication related AT, but for accessible keyboards even more so.
Something like AssistiveWare's keyboards for Android would be a dream, but nobody seems interested in either porting any of these apps over, or developing original ones.
I have been interest in NerChat (Leaf keyboard I think is what they call their symbol keyboard that can be used across apps. I don't think it's on the Android version yet, at any rate) but it's so new that I don't know if I want to trust it yet.
A big barrier to me using my phone app based AAC at times is using a standard keyboard. It's basically impossible to use when close to meltdown. I'm a decent typist and have small fingers, but I prefer symbols and big buttons greatly for my own cognitive processing, so that becomes problematic. While in meltdown, I can't hit the right keys or prediction buttons.
I wish Android wasn't so left behind in terms of accessibility.
