Architecture Buddies

It was a fantastic week meeting new people from the BAC. We shared our interests and knowledge, which was great because it allowed us to exchange insights about the classes we’ve taken and hear about each other’s experiences at the school, including the challenges we’ve faced. It was also inspiring to hear how others are navigating their academic journeys and balancing school with their personal and professional lives.I’m especially grateful for the opportunity to learn from different perspectives, as it broadened my understanding of how people approach their studies and career goals.

Wisdom Worth Sharing

The biggest takeaway from my externship at DCAMM is gaining new insights into the world of architecture. Brenna, our mentor, really shaped this week by showing us not just how the job flows but also some life lessons. One of the things that stood out to me is that Brenna made a career switch from business to architecture. She told me that, yes, adjusting to new changes and beginnings takes time, but it’s worth it.

It was inspiring to see that Brenna wasn’t the only one making a career shift. One of the members of the office planning team also shared her experience of how tough it was in the beginning. But like Brenna said, if this is what you want for your future, you’ve got to put in the work and keep learning, even outside of school.

One thing I really liked about Brenna and the team was their approach to questions: “There’s no such thing as a dumb question. It’s better to ask than to be left wondering.” That openness made me feel comfortable and eager to learn.

I’m really grateful for this amazing opportunity and for everything I’ve learned. This externship has taught me valuable lessons that I’ll definitely carry into my future career.

Client Site Visit

Our team had the opportunity to visit two DCAMM projects. The first was a courthouse where we attended a presentation by the architects, showcasing their remodeling work. We discussed the issues with the new design and identified areas that needed to be changed. It was a valuable experience to observe a design meeting and learn how these discussions unfold. As architects, it highlighted the importance of receiving feedback constructively.

The second project took us to the Shattuck Hospital near Mass Avenue. We met with the architect, who explained the hospital's new features and the ongoing efforts to address its challenges. It was fascinating to see how the program operates for a hospital serving DPH, DMH, and DOC/HoC populations. I learned a lot, and one key takeaway from the architect was: "Always keep learning, even if something isn't your direct responsibility. It's essential to understand what others are doing, and it ensures things are being done correctly."

WWE (warm, welcoming, environment)

At DCAMM, intercultural competence was well integrated into the work environment. From my understanding, this means effectively and appropriately interacting with people from different cultural backgrounds. We had the opportunity to participate in a Zoom meeting where they discussed the courthouse renovation project. The team members shared valuable perspectives, and the architects were receptive to the changes needed to ensure the facilities function as intended. It's evident at DCAMM that, even though each team works on different projects, they rely on each other for feedback and collaborate to find the best solutions for any issues that arise.

Neighborly

Day 1

From the moment I stepped into DCAMM, the warm and welcoming atmosphere was evident, especially with Ginger's friendly greeting. With Mondays being quieter during the summer, we had zoom meetings where we got to know some of the staff and learn about their roles, making me feel instantly connected. The environment here is inclusive and supportive, with a strong sense of teamwork and openness that encourages us to ask questions. As Brenna mentioned to us, "there is never a dumb question to ask," encouraging us to speak up without fear. This sentiment really underscores the supportive and inclusive environment at DCAMM, where asking anything is welcomed and seen as a valuable part of the learning process. Being back in this neighborhood near my old university brought a nostalgic comfort, making me feel connected not just to the people at DCAMM, but also to the vibrant buildings that surround us. It made me feel like I was back home. <3

I'm Tzuna Herrera

My name is Tzuna Xactani Herrera Lopez, but you can just call me Xac (pronounced 'shack'). I'm in the M.Arch program and originally from Cancún, Mexico. My entire life has been shaped by the ocean's breeze and the water, and I grew up admiring my father, who is an architect and my role model. I aspire to design spaces that allow people to connect with nature and themselves! <3
