Finally got to cross U-505 off my bucket list. A really fantastic display.

The surrounding exhibit does a good job of establishing context for the Battle of the Atlantic and is filled with a good variety of history, crew life, and science and engineering spread through displays of varying interactivity so that you can choose your own level of engagement without missing out on too much of the narrative.

Definitely recommend visiting if you’re ever in Chicago.

Captain Daniel V Gallery on the captured U-505

Gallery was a wrestler at the US Naval Academy from 1917 and wrestled for the USA in the featherweight Greco competition at the Antwerp Olympics in 1920.

He commanded Task Group 22.3 from the escort carrier USS Guadalcanal which on June 4, 1940 captured the German U-boat U-505 off the coast of Africa. The boarders, led by Lieutenant Albert David, retrieved the submarine's Enigma coding machine and code books.

After the war he was promoted to Rear Admiral and became Assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations. He commanded Carrier Division Six during the Korean War.
