Assassin’s Creed franchise taking 2016 off
Ubisoft’s blog, conveniently named Ubiblog, featured a post today regarding the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise.
In short, it looks like the franchise is going to take a break for 2016:
This year, we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin’s Creed franchise. As a result, we’ve decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016.
As of late, Assassin’s Creed has become an annualized release. You could expect a new title once a year, and in some cases, multiple titles in one year. Hell, I just scanned Wikipedia and saw that 2014 saw four Assassin’s Creed games!
Judging by their most recent releases, it looks like the gaming community may be suffering from a little Assassin’s Creed fatigue. Unity was a horrid mess at release, featuring many game-breaking and other technical issues. This Kotaku article showcased many of the... uh... impressive bugs Unity had to offer. As a result of these technical issues and Ubisoft going back to the well one too many times, Unity was seen as a huge disappointment.
Here’s a little more from the Ubiblog:
...we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise. We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground.
Now, I know this reeks heavily of DevSpeak™, but I think Ubisoft deserves a fair chance here. It isn’t exactly an everyday occurrence that a huge multinational corporation like Ubisoft takes time to essentially let the fans know “Hey, so yeah we messed up”. I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt here BUT keep my expectations in check for the next installment.
I remember playing the original Assassin’s Creed and being absolutely floored. There weren’t many games at the time that had such an open environment to play in. I mean yeah, Grand Theft Auto was around and is similarly praised for its open worlds, but Assassin’s Creed’s cities took advantage of vertical space as well as sheer square footage. I’m also an architecture nerd sometimes and Assassin’s Creed had some amazing looking buildings that felt like they were straight out of the particular era featured in the game.
It was around Assassin’s Creed III where I felt the fatigue creep in. The boring ass protagonist didn’t help either. I can distinctly recall opening the map during one of my sessions with the game, seeing the absolutely insane amount of activity icons spread out everywhere and being like “nah fuck this, man”. And I’m pretty sure I never returned to the game after that moment.
I’m hoping this hiatus that Ubisoft is taking from the franchise helps them find that winning formula that put this franchise on the map. A more focused and tight narrative would be a good place to start. Giving players more things to do is never a bad thing, but in this case I hope Ubisoft dials that back a bit. At least in my situation, having more stuff to do had the opposite effect on my interest in their game.
And for fuck’s sake, get rid of the damn tower climbing mechanic.
