Wedding Kimono (Uchikake)
Chiba Prefecture, Japan
c.1850 (Edo Period)
Denver Art Museum
This is, without question, the most beautiful uchikake I've ever seen.
Uchikake have a limited wearing possibility. They are the outer layer of wedding kimono.
The hem is padded so it can be dragged through the "aisle". When outside, the uchikake is held up by a belt to protect the hem from getting dirty.
When white coloured, it is part of an all white ensemble called shiromuku.
Coloured uchikake are also common, they come mostly with a lot of red accents, although other colours exist too.
