Thiago Alves v John Howard I feel sorry for Doomsday because he is going to get eaten by the Pitbull. Man that was a bad opening line. Howard is coming off his loss to Jake Ellenberger where his eye looked like a apple and he appeared to be the black version of Sloth. Alves is coming off his loss to Jon Fitch where he got Fitch’d. If Alves can come in on weight without any ill effects to his body he should be able to get a TKO in the 2nd. Howard could try to work takedowns but his wrestling isn’t good enough to really keep him down like Fitch and GSP. Alves is better in the striking department and slightly better on the ground. Unless Alves gasses bad with enough time in the second for Howard to win that round he most likely isn’t going to win this one. Thiago Alves TKO round 2 Joe Stevenson v Mac Danzig This is a must win for both of these fighters. Danzig is 4-1 in his last 5 but his last loss was early so take that for what you will. Stevenson is 2-3 but to better competition at least. It would reflect worse on Stevenson if he lost to Danzig.Stevenson is a better fighter than Danzig in most areas of the fight. Stevenson is going to look and use his wrestling and dominate Danzig from the top. Danzig will want to keep things standing since he should be able to win the boxing aspect of the fight. If he can keep it standing maybe he has a shot at this. Still those odds are not good for Danzig. The loser of this fight will most likely get cut as the UFC continues to trim the fat on its roster. Joe Stevenson via Dec Jim Miller vs. Charles Oliveira How will Oliveria react to being in there with a good wrestler? Miller doesn't have any major credentials but he dose have that mentality. Oliveria is really long and lanky for 5’10 and wild. Miller is only two inches smaller and thicker. Oliverira has slick beautiful BJJ but is he going to get muscled around by Miller. Miller can keep the fight standing most likely barring some crazy jump to guard inside trip shananigins. On the feet Oliveira is hitable and wild with his kicks this leads him open to counter shots. Clinching may not be the smartest move since Oliveria could try to drop and pull guard. He was though being controlled fairly well by Escudero so Miller should be able to do the same. Oliveira Is going to need to take it down and look to dominate and submit Miller. How he gets it there is another question. If he can clinch up and get a trip than good for him. Standing though his wild style isn’t going to work well against a compact Miller. Jim Miller via Dec Stefan Struve vs. Sean McCorkle I am still waiting for Struve to learn to work a jab and pick up boxing better. Struve in his last fight showed he can take a major punch adn come back at you if you let him survive. McCorkle is coming off his submission win to Mark Hunt. His record on the regional scene isn’t the greatest lots of sub .500 fighters his best win was against Jonathan Ivey 29-44 who is at least experienced. McCorkle has a lot of power in his hands and can get a submission if he needs to. On the ground though Struve is far and ahead better and will be able to use his lanky limbs to tie up and submit McCorkle. McCorkle is 37 in a young mans division really he has only gone to the 3rd round once in his carrear. Struve is going to be able to submit or hopefully out strike him. I will give McCorkle his due though he has made this fight interesting by pulling a Chael Sonnen and going on crazy Twitter rampages. Stefan Struve via TKO round 2 Welterweight Championship: Georges St-Pierre (c) vs. Josh Koscheck GSP has already beaten Josh Koscheck. I doubt things will be different this time around. St-Pierre mma wrestling is better than Koschecks mma wrestling. Now in pure wrestling maybe things are different but this isn’t wrestling this is MMA. It is also worth mentioning the fighters Koshcheck has faced in the run up to this fight hasn’t been the best, Daley was going to clearly be out classed. GSP is going to look and do what he dose which is take you down you down get in superior position and try to submit you or pound your face in. This may not be pretty but it is DAMN effective. Koscheck though can defend a good takedown when he needs to. This would turn into a striking match. This is another area GSP should hold the advantage he has been working with Freddy Roach and is still doing work in Tri Star up in Canada. His fluidity to set up a takedown by unbalancing his opponent can also nullify Koschecks takedown defense. Koscheck dose have some good power in it and has some good KO on his record. IF he can catch GSP like Matt Serra than he can take this. That is still a major upset and the odds of which are not good. Look for this to be a interesting wrestling match at first wit cage clinching. It would be very interesting to see what would happen to GSP if he can’t take Koscheck down and is forced to stand with his opponent. GSP via Dec
This Week in UFC History; Georges St-Pierre defeats Josh Koscheck via unanimous decision at UFC 124, December 11th, 2010.
Preview of UFC 134 in Rio - Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Forrest Griffin 2
UFC Fight Night 24
With soccer picking up as of late I haven't had the time to keep up with mma as much as I would like. With that said, I still follow it religiously and keep far more abreast of things than most.
I am really interested to see how tonight's fight night plays out. Since I have about 15 minutes here before my next team meeting, I thought I would throw up some hastily made predictions and see how I do on tonights card. I will briefly break down the fights and share what I am going to wager on this evening.
Garcia Vs Jung - This should be an amazing fight and one I am really looking forward to watching. Whoever wins, I am fairly sure both will beat the living s*** out of each other before it's over. Jung can bring it but I will go with Garcia in this one.
Sadollah Vs Johnson - I am really looking forward to this fight as well and I absolutely love the odds. I am a big Amir fan, and am a bit biased for him, but Johnson is pretty legit and at +200 a very appealing betting line. I am a bit concerned with betting this fight because the odds look way off to me. Ahhh F*** it. My heart will be with Amir, my cash will be parlayed on Johnson.
Hardy Vs Johnson - Another potentially great fight on this card. Hardy has struggled as of late getting bitched by GSP and knocked out by Conduit. Johson is hardly better off being out the last 16 months and ballooning up to 231lbs. Does Hardy get KTFO again or does Johnson fade due to the layoff and ridiculously massive weight cut. I say if Johnson is going to win it has to be early or in the first round at least. After that, Hardy takes control and wins it from there. Hardy is the second play in my parlay due to Johnson's layoff, his weight cut. Just for good measure, Hardy has been relatively quiet in the lead up to this fight which to me indicates he might be more focused than normal and that can only be a good sign for him.
Davis Vs Noguiera - While Pride never dies, it is on heavy life support and tonight will be no different. This one is easy in my book and Davis is the third part of my parlay.
Davis - Hardy - Johnson = 9.5 to 1 payout. I may not win but going in I am really loving this card and my chances.
Enjoy the fights everyone!
Here's a breakdown of the UFC 124 submissions by the Gracies.
5 Results for UFC 124: St. Pierre vs. Koscheck
At UFC 124, you saw why Georges St. Pierre is considered one of the pound-for-pound best MMA fighters in the world. Along with a great main event, it showed the return of Thiago Alves to vintage form and a scary Lightweight Contender in Jim Miller. It was fun night of fights and the Montreal fans were as crazy as ever. Here were the results from the event:
1. GSP completely dominated Koscheck with ease
The most amazing aspect of Georges St. Pierre's game is that he's able to completely take his opponents out of their comfort zone. We've seen it with his wrestling, kickboxing, and now against Josh Koscheck -- his boxing. He literally kept Koscheck at bay with a stiff jab that landed consistently throughout the whole fight. It was truly a mixed martial arts fight where you saw everything, mostly coming from GSP.
People are going to criticize GSP for not finishing the fight, but come on -- he completely dominated. I really thought Koscheck would have a chance against him, but after this fight -- I don't see anyone in the UFC Welterweight Division beating GSP.
(-1) Prediction: Josh Koscheck over Georges St. Pierre
2. Stefan Struve escapes a submission and lands a TKO
I really thought Stefan Struve was a huge mismatch against Sean McCorkle. Then in the beginning of the round, McCorkle was very close in ending the fight with a keylock -- my jaw literally dropped thinking the fight was over. Luckily, Struve was calm enough to escape and reverse the position into his mount on McCorkle. From that point, the fight was over. Let's see Struve fight a Top 10 Heavyweight.
(+1) Prediction: Stefan Struve over Sean McCorkle
3. Jim Miller wants the respect he deserves in the Lightweight Division
I was blown away with Jim Miller's performance against Charles Oliveira. I definitely see that coming, but boy did it come. Miller seemed like he was fighting with a chip on his shoulder and during the press conference, you knew why. After submitting the highly touted prospect with a knee bar, Miller yelled, "I want my shot!" during his interview with Joe Rogan. He's 8-1 in the UFC, with only loses to Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. He deserves a shot.
(-1) Prediction: Charles Oliveira over Jim MIller
4. Mac Danzig lands a flash knockout on Joe Stevenson
Did anyone think Mac Danzig had knockout power? I sure didn't, but he put Joe Stevenson to sleep with a quick left hand moving back. It really looked like the Paul Daley knockout of Scott Smith in Strikeforce. I really don't know where Stevenson goes from here, but Dana White says he'll stay in the UFC despite loss. I really hope he rebuilds his career -- I love comeback stories.
(-1) Prediction: Joe Stevenson over Mac Danzig
5. Thiago "Pitbull" Alves is back!
Thiago Alves returned back to form with some of the most technical Muay Thai against John Howard, a Muay Thai fighter himself. I loved watching this fight especially after watching the K-1 Grand Prix the night before. Thiago has some of the sickest kicks in MMA, and every time I see him whip that leg across I feel sorry for the body part it lands on. You just don't see that type of striking consistently in MMA. Along with the striking, he also displayed some wrestling and judo -- looks like he's becoming a full-fledged mixed martial artist.
(+1) Prediction: Thiago Alves over John Howard
