What an fantastic round 1 for Yan-Sterling. I get the idea of trying to bring the fight to Yan for Aljo. He’s never really fought a dedicated volume pressure fighter, but I don’t think Aljo can maintain that pace. As soon as Sterling let up, Yan dropped him.
Amanda Nunes submits Megan Anderson in about 90 seconds
Non event is right! Nunes gets Anderson out of there with a quickness. Hits Anderson with a nice overhand that put her on skates and turned her around. Follows it up with a couple more shots that turns Megan into a wrestler and then takes Megan’s back. From there she locks up a reverse triangle armbar and gets the tap.
The only fight that really interest me for Nunes is Kayla Harrison but that isn’t happening anytime soon. I guess there’s the winner of Holm-Pena but that doesn’t move me.
Petr Yan has been DQ-ed. Aljamain Sterling is now the UFC bantamweight champion.
After an amazing 4 rounds of fighting, Yan throws one of the most blatant illegal knees to have ever been thrown in the UFC. I’ll say that knee should 100% be legal, but it’s not under the current rules. No freaking clue what Yan was thinking. Dumbest move in the history of UFC title fights. Bummed for Sterling cause he didn’t want to win it this way and it’s showing on his face.
Aljo did, however, expose a bunch of potential holes for future Yan opponents. Namely, pressuring back with volume. I think Aljo had the right idea but bad execution. He kept his strikes in Yan’s face but he was throwing way too much power fluff.
Mandy's fight starting soon!
UFC 259 going down today. Starts at 5:15 pm ET.
It’s a long one.
Who does everyone have being champ by the end of the night?
I got Adesanya, Nunes, and Yan (I’m only 55/45 on this one).
Jan Blachowicz takes a decision over Israel Adesanya!
Absolutely fantastic performance from Blachowicz to win this fight. Adesanya had Jan biting on every single feint for the first 3.5 rounds of this fight. The problem is Jan was able to sit behind his jab and just touch Izzy. Izzy’s defense against the jab has always been to lean back and wait to counter the cross and Jan used that to his advantage. Repeatedly tagged Adesanya with it from range. Only threw the right hand when Adesanya would try to switch stances directly in front of him. Then in rounds 4 and 5 he brought out the takedowns in the center of the cage as opposed to along the fence. The fight was fought completely at a low simmer, and while people thought that would favor Adesanya, Izzy didn’t throw/land enough to make it count because Jan kept touching him. The thing that I thought would cost Jan the fight never happened - he never blitzed. The blitz that got him KOed by Thiago and won him the belt against Reyes never materialized. Just otherworldly patience from Jan.
I think Izzy also bought into Jan being a big power puncher. At a certain point he was just standing directly in front of Jan. Wasn’t trying to draw him back into any punches. Just stood directly in front of him waiting for Jan to throw an overhand that never materialized.
