the whole 'relationship' between link and zelda in botw/totk is soooo fucking lackluster and blah compared to how much the games want to push it as some emotional core, even though zelda is doing literally all of the work with changing her behavior and initiating interaction and doing things for link while you never see link do anything outside of his job and basic human decency and stuff for the sake of the entire world. its so incredibly one-sided and even on the one side it's incredibly half-baked and poorly developed and results in the abandonment of a potentially interesting zelda characterization into just pretty maiden princess who is devoted to link. its all zelda going out of her way to do things and on link/the player's end it's just save the world and get zelda as the reward. she is narratively and mechanically just a prize at the end and not in the story and not in the gameplay is link really displayed ever doing anything extra for her or really indicating an especially strong fondness for her, romantic or otherwise. for all the bullshit these games let you do you never get the option to decide to do something extra nice for zelda. youre just benefitting from stuff she does for link or tying up loose ends left by her. this 'relationship' sucks on like every level like at what point of it does any consideration of them having actual chemistry based on their personalities factor in

#not just a dig at reading it as romantic they barely seem like friends bc there is no major effort from link on that part #saving zelda being intrinsically tied to saving the world does not help in making link seem motivated to help her out of their bond #uhhhhhh.#zelink negative #fuck how do i tag this so i dont get annoying ppl arguing at me #zelink critical #anti zelink #thats. probably enough #it sucks!!!!!!! especially since you as the player cant even do fucking anything to interact with the relationship #you cant talk to her you cant set up anything nice for her its all zelda giving and giving and giving and GOD!!!!!!!#girl we gotta get you out of these fucking games #salty talks #like. you can do a developing positive relationship between a quiet protag and a real character #fuckin. smt iv i think does this decently with flynn and isabeau bc whike isabeau clearly cares abt and like flynn #(romantic or otherwise its never really pushed imo) you as flynn have dialogue options with her in the story #and the neutral route that she features in involves flynn aligning himself with values she has which is. something!!!#also as the player you have the option to bring her to a room that has the last book in a series she likes #and it makes her happy to find it and finish her series and its really cute that you have this option #its unnecessary but its really cute that the game just. lets you remember this room and do a nice thing for this character #what does botw/totk let you do beyond save her. what is the relationship. half of this relationship is not allowed personality #and it really fucking sucks that its the girl character putting in all of the work and 'coming around' to the boy #who stands around like a cardboard cutout and is rewarded with her affection doing the baseline right thing for the greater good #originally part of a reply chain but ofc this got too big and i figured i outta make it its own thing #shes just a reward. she gets folded down and boxed in in service to a boy that never reciprocates even through allowed player action #its not anything new that zeldas just a reward either. it just feels worse bc more stock is put into it and yet it still just falls flat #but people and the game try to insist and insist that its so much more meaningful than it actually is #in botw the mooost we get is the reference to him helping her with his horse but the problem is that that and everything else like it #like in her diary and whatnot is off screen. theyre just telling us these things so it kinda just. doesnt matter?#its the same as trying to force it as an emotional core theyre banking on it meaning something without needed to put in the work #so what we really only see is zelda doing all of the heavy lifting and link getting praised and rewarded for doing the bare minimum
