BOTD: Hawfinch

Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes)

The Hawfinch is a member of the finch family whose closest living relatives are various Grosbeak species. It uses its tough, large beak to break through seeds of fruits and trees, and even those of cherries and plums, and its beak exerts force equal to a load of roughly 30-48kg.

First time I have seen long tailed tits in the garden before and I am so pleased I managed to capture the moment

BOTD: Eurasian Spoonbill

Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia)

The Eurasian Spoonbill's beak, from which it derives its name, is swept side to side in the water, its sensitive bill sensing tiny vibrations and locating prey, as well as filtering small fish and shrimps. They are mostly silent with their main sound being bill snapping.

BOTD: Eurasian Woodcock

Eurasian woodcock (Scolopax rusticola)

Eurasian Woodcock are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. They forage by probing soft soil in thickets with their long bill, mainly eating (but not only) earthworms. It is a wading bird, but more adapted for life in woodlands and fields than for wading through water.

BOTD: Redwing

Redwing (Turdus iliacus)

The Redwing is a bird that winters in the United Kingdom, often joining feeding flocks with the similar-looking Fieldfare, as well as Common Blackbirds, Starlings, and sometimes other birds. They eat insects and earthworms all year, but are primarily sustained by berries, particularly rowan and hawthorn, in the winter.
