A Russian ballistic missile damaged the ship โOptimaโ, which was sailing under the flag of Palau. It arrived for loading on 7 October and was hit by a Russian strike a few hours later. According to Oleksiy Kuleba, the Minister of Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, one person was killed, and five more crew members, who were foreign citizens, were injured.
This is the second civilian cargo ship to suffer from the Russian Federation in the last two days. Before that, on the night of 6 October, the Russians damaged the ship โParesaโ under the flag of St. Kitts and Nevis near one of the berths in the Southern seaport. About 6,000 tons of Ukrainian corn were supposed to be exported.
โThis is a purposeful practice of intimidation and obstruction of the work of the Ukrainian Maritime Corridor. In this way, the aggressor is trying to destroy once again shipping in the Black Sea and undermine Ukrainian efforts to guarantee food security,โ Oleksiy Kuleba notes.
