Closing the year with one of my coolest 2021 projects, this time in full picture! I started the year dreaming of a Ritchey Ultra 2021 to enjoy the ride of steel. This turned into a heritage build, with every component, every screw referring to a famous historical à MTB Component. With the help of some passionate people I was able to learn more about Ritchey and MTB history. Then started the hunt for an original Ultra from late 80’s. Was able to find one in Germany! It is not yet a true 1989 catalog build (will follow), but an (almost) perfect sibling to the 2021, simply with the original MTB components. Some more shots of the sibling build (still more to come). On one side 21 speed drive train, with 7 speed 12-28 cassette, when Deore XT II still was the best possible group from Shimano. On the other side, 10-52 12 speed cassette from SRAM who remove the front chainrings from MTB! Between both 32 years! Some more shots of the sibling build (still more to come). 20cm and 31 years difference between these 2 handlebars. Already hydraulic brakes, but as SRAM did not exist in 1989, Deore XT thumbshifters were paramount. In 2021, Reverb dropper post from SRAM replaced the Ritehite, and Rockshox Twistloc is inspired by first Gripshifts. Carbon bar provide some flex, but do not filter as the old steel models could. Magura introduced hydraulic to MTB and with their first discs disrupted the market. Raceline versions have always been, 1990 as well as 2021 their flagships. Here some shots of the sibling build (more to come). 31 years of MTB engineering in these pictures: wheels moved from 26 to 27,5 and 29, rims changed from alloy to carbon, brakes went to discs. These brands made history. RockShox and Paul Turner created the first hydraulic fork in 1989. 30 years later, RockShox launched the RS1 in limited edition for the anniversary! DT Swiss built the Hügi hubs in 1991 and are still proposing among the best hubs in 2021 with their 240S, here in Predictive Steering for the inverted fork. Magura introduced hydraulic to MTB and with their first discs disrupted the market. Raceline versions have always been, 1990 as well as 2021 their flagships. Mavic established the reference in the market in 1993 with the 217 SUP Ceramic rims. Today, DT Swiss XMC rims in Carbon have 30mm internal width and the flagship of the Swiss brand leading the market. The 90's were the time of alloy nipples, here in blue. Finally, in 1992, 2 tires were leading the first downhill races: The Panaracer Smoke and the Onza Porcupine. The threads and volume of these tires made podiums for years. It is still hard to believe how fun and enjoyable the ride was today: first real ride with the old timer. And the ritcheylogic magic of steel worked again: what a smooth and live ride. Steel from 1989 on this #Ultra, and still so fun!!! I am also amazed how well the RockShox RS1 from 1989 works! Not the stiffest at all, but awesome hydraulics! Paul Turner got it right first time. And the Magura Raceline from 1990 are still so powerful and reliable…they stand the quality of the Shimano Deore XT from 1989: sharp, smooth. Impossible to recognize this technology is 32 years old.
