Always #bekindtoelephants #trunkupwines ・・・ Seeing them now – happy, healthy, and on track to return to a life in the wild – it’s easy to forget the horrors that these elephants endured. The orphans at our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit are some of the most vulnerable individuals in our care. From Quanza (who saw her family gunned down by poachers right before her eyes) to Mwashoti (whose leg was all but severed off by a snare) to Zongoloni (who valiantly stood guard over her mother as she succumbed to bullet wounds) and beyond, each orphan has a tragic story to tell — most at the hands of humans. We can’t erase their past, but in this lush and protected forest environment, we can give these survivors a chance to blossom in our care and, one day, live a fully independent life. • Want to help us give more orphans like these two a future? Take part in #GivingTuesday tomorrow, when DSWT donations will be matched up to $250,000. See our previous post for more information and stay tuned for all the details tomorrow! • • • Photo © David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust / Freya Dowson #DSWT #elephants #whyilovekenya #kenya #nairobi #dswtnursery #africa #umanisprings #kibweziforest #umanispringsreintegrationunit #magicalkenya #savetheelephants #nairobinationalpark #saynotopoaching #racingextinction #jointheherd #DSWTat40 #worthmorealive #bekindtoelephants
