Exclusive: Activist tells of his life as one of India’s most prominent political prisoners and his opposition to the government of Narendra
"You even hear murmurs about yourself from fellow prisoners you shared meals with, calling you a terrorist behind your back. This propaganda dehumanises me in people’s eyes,” he said. “Humanity is a privilege that is not granted to people like me."
Reminder that Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, who are the darling "political prisoners" in the eyes of USA, are dangerous terrorists who would have gotten death penalty if they did similar activities in any other country. Only India is secular and lenient and only Hindus are a chutiya qoum who believe that world is fair like them.
just saw news of rahul gandhi being detained. If you think that he, in performing all of this drama, truly cares about democracy in India--or really just any of us at all--outside his own interests, then you're either ignorant or a fool.
"Wo darte hai, kis baat se darte he ye? Tamam Gola Barud ke bawajood ye darte hai. Iss baar se darte hai, ki ek din gareeb, nihatte log inse darna band kar denge." - Umar Khalid.
This man's name has been used by multiple right wing believers to defame the people in the Jantar Mantar protes. You may know him as the man who said "Bharat tere tukde tukde honge", but do you at all know who he is?
He's a PhD scholar who researched on the plight of adivasis. He's someone who doesn't even have a passport. He's also someone who NEVER said the above statement. Out of the videos sent by the dm, 3 vidoes were doctored and fake. The videos showing him saying these were FAKE. And media has circulated this perception of him so many times, that ordinary people don't even care enough to look beyond.
He's the same man who said, "We're Indians not by chance but by choice."
He protested for your rights, for people's rights even when they didn't concern him.
And if you may argue, that he might be so called 'anti national', then why has the police in 6 years not been able to file a proper chargesheet? Why? Why aren't they proving it in court? Because they can't. The only way to supress true nationalists like him, is to keep them in jail indefinitely.
I'm just wondering what would happen if he was out of jail. I'm sure he would be at this protest, and fighting for the rights of the people.
One recent “point,” Bhattacharya recalled, was Khalid telling them that from what he had seen in jail, Hindi-language newspapers are how most inmates got their news. If they were running public campaigns to persuade the BJP government to release political prisoners under their regime, they should start writing in Hindi. Lahiri recalled that while English-language newspapers carried both the prosecution and defence arguments of Khalid’s year-long bail hearings in the trial court hearing the Delhi riots conspiracy case and then the Delhi High Court, the Hindi language newspapers barely reported the arguments Khalid’s lawyer Trideep Pais made in court. They, however, carried the claims made by the police in a prominent place, with headlines that made allegations sound like facts.

I often wonder, how long is this dark tunnel? Is there any light in sight yet? Am I near the end, or am I only midway through? Or has the ordeal just begun?
How do we fight against this monstrous machine of lies and falsehood? The purveyors of hate and falsehood have so many resources – money, pliant 24×7 news channels, lots of them, troll armies, and the police too. To be honest, Rohit, it makes me feel pessimistic at times. At times I also feel lonely. Lots of people far more privileged than me who were together in this fight against fascism, in the movement against CAA-NRC/NPR, today choose to remain silent when I am singled out for these lies. It makes you feel unwanted. It makes you feel a stranger in your own land. The only thing I find succour in in such moments is the realisation that none of this is personal. That my persecution and isolation is symbolic of something larger – the persecution and isolation of Muslims in India right now.
Umar Khalid, writing from prison, has provided a razor sharp indictment of how insidious fascist propaganda has become in India. He has been in jail for two years now under UAPA charges.
Let me first first start with who they are. Khalid and Imam are Indian Muslims who have been in jail for the past five years. Charges against them are heavy. It is cited in the mainstream news that Khalid and Imam were protesting against the current government of India led by Narendra Modi of BJP, which is claimed to be a "Hindu nationalist party that is oppressing minorities in India". Except, there's more to the story.
Umar Khalid, is the son of Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas who used to be in the now banned SIMI (Students Islamic Movement of India), which was associated with the Indian Mujahideen, an Islamist terrorist organisation that has been responsible for numerous deadly coordinated bombings across India especially in the mid 2000s. Here's a video about their far reaching effects. Do watch it to understand the context when you read about PFI later on. Khalid himself claims that he is a communist and not a practising Muslim. How Khalid identifies has little to do with why he was arrested though. Khalid had a decisive role in a larger conspiracy, he was not arrested "just for giving a speech ". Sharjeel Imam too, the son of politician Akbar Imam, IIT Bombay and JNU educated "activist", was not arrested "just for his speech about cutting off Siligur corridor from India".
Both the Shaheen Bagh and Deli riots started as a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act of India (CAA, which was about giving a fast tracked citizenship to Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian refugees from Bangladesh and Pakistan) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC, a government effort to give proper identification to all Indian citizens, something that every single country in this world has). Why would anyone oppose a law that would give shelter to persecuted refugees and make sure citizens have their legal rights? Below are two links to the summary of the chargesheet on the grounds of the arrests of Khalid and Imam. They literally conspired with Islamist groups like PFI and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind to foment violence in northeast Delhi, which claimed several lives.
In the charge sheet running into 10,000 pages, the police has listed 747 witnesses and of them 51 have recorded their statements under CRPC
Moreover, look at Sharjeel Imam's old Facebook post. Translation below.
Here Imam is saying "Pujo (Durga Puja) preparations are going on, this is why, Inshallah, we must protest against fascism and superstition, because in this season, most comrades of CPI(M), enamoured with the beauty of idols, are engaging in idolatry. It is hard to tell if comrades 1) are doing idolatry because they are cultural Hindus, 2) have done ghar wapsi (embraced Hinduism again), 3) they haven't been honest, or 4) this is the new policy of Marxists. Because of this confusion, revolution is on hold by one month (that's usually how long the festivities around Durga Puja last). May Allah protect you."
Just look at that. Don't Bengali communists have any shame left they're still supporting this pervert prophet Muhammad and child Aisha's rape product? Now take a look at Indian leftist ⬇️.
Look at the language of this person. Juxtapose this guy's statement about Sharjeel Imam with his previous statement about an attack in Kashmir by the terrorist organisation "The Resistance Front" which stems from Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Basically, are Indian leftist marxist sickularist liberandos and other malcontents seriously now arguing that inciteful hate speech should be seen "poetically, not literally"?
Muslim comrade: "My Muslim pookies, your strength lies in numbers and capability of violence, lets break Siliguri corridor of the kafir India and show them what we did in 1947"
Indian leftist: "tehee, it's just resistance against fascism you sanghis!!! it's poetry, like ghazal, you hindutva monkeys would not understand uwu"
Lmaoooooo
There are many awkward, but not maliciously intended, words by Hindus that are policed and torn apart by the English educated Indian leftist liberals. They give a lot of cover fire to the likes of Imam and Khalid because inquilaab!! But they don't give this much grace to Veer Savarkar or Godse. This is a form of classism and internalized racism.
