"This character is so problematic" "this ship is so toxic" "omg that character pisses me off how can you like them so much" Bro don't you know that the best kind of media portrays complex, damaged, deeply flawed characters? The compelling part of Barbie (2023) is that she's NOT perfect. The reason people love Mr. Darcy he has to change. The tragedy of Anakin Skywalker is that he wasn't inherently evil; he was a product of the shitty world he lived in.

I KNOW my character/ship/series is problematic/toxic/insert-negative-word-here, I'm rooting for them to grow. Because we, as humans, are shitty, no-good, mean, toxic, problematic--and characters should be too. A perfect character would be uninteresting and bland. An imperfect character reflects the ugly, embarrassing, horrible parts of ourselves we know but will never say aloud. An imperfect character represents all the ways we could be better. An imperfect character represents the pain of loving someone we know will never change. But most of all, an imperfect character is a damaged, flawed, and shitty person. Just like us.

"How could you like this character?" My brother in Christ, if you've never loved anyone flawed, then you've never loved anyone at all.

(and sometimes you just need to love an unequivocally evil character. but this isn't about them.)
