Marty Mauser Is A Loser (film review)
marty played in yall faces.
marty mauser was a loser. he was a deeply insecure man who didn’t believe in his own capabilities as a player and watching the movie felt like looking at the physical manifestation of his internal world, just a whole ass mess. constant motion, always thinking, always on the go and always self sabotaging. the way you feel about yourself is ultimately how your reality reveals itself and marty is constantly burning bridges in pursuit of a happiness that never actually arrives. marty knew from the beginning that endo was everything he could never be. he saw natural success, persistence and humility and that is exactly why he was immediately attracted to him. marty made endo a threat because he couldnt handle seeing someone actually possess the things he was trying to fake.
i’m convinced marty fakes his confidence because people who aren’t happy within themselves tend to overcompensate which is why he got so defensive whenever anyone even thought about his dream not coming true. there was zero internal peace there and because misery loves company his energy just permeated everyone around him. marty is actually way more aware than people give him credit for. he just doesn’t give a damn. marty knows if he reeks of desperation it’ll either attract or repel people and he uses that as a filter. the people willing to be drawn to that desperation are either the ones who will go to the ends of the earth for him like rachel or the ones who will leave him out in the dust like mr rockwell.
he isn't just "messy" he is calculated with it. he uses his own instability to see who he can pull into his orbit and who he can’t. he doesn't want to be like endo because being a stable man who knows his worth requires a level of internal peace that marty would rather trade for a hustle. if you feel bad for him while you're watching you're basically falling for the same trap as rachel. he’s weaponizing his own misery because it’s the only leverage he actually has left. he’s not trying to get better he’s just trying to see how much more he can take from everyone else before the bridge finally burns down. why do you think he scammed so many people? his misery was the only thing he actually had to share. honestly his charm didn’t work on me he wasn't someone to root for he was just hard to watch. he was a humiliation no one’s hero and ultimately just not important. his misery is so potent that as an audience we wanted him to win in the end just so we feel like we didn’t fail just by watching him destroy everyone’s life for 2 and a half hours.
the wildest part is that the opportunities were right in front of him presented naturally. marty legit had the opportunity to be exactly what he wanted to be but he didn’t want to wait for it. he didn't want to earn it. he chose what he thought he wanted instead of expanding into a deeper horizon where he could’ve had what he wanted and more but he was so focused on his version his story his punchline and his own selfishness that he self sabotaged before the natural growth could even happen. and endos hearing loss adds a whole other layer too because he doesnt need outside distractions to be great. endo is a paragon of stillness and focus while marty is just loud noise. the quiet is actually what makes endo so good at what he does while marty is just screaming into the void to feel important.
see how that final win was never supposed to be marty’s in the first place? he forced it. he forced a game just to feed his own ego even when he knew it would leave him stranded and penniless in japan. it’s like he’s living in an old story. the way wally calls him maus immediately made me think of the graphic novel which is a story where hustling and fighting was a literal necessity for survival but marty is living in that old story when he doesn’t even have to. he’s fighting for everything as if he’s still in the trenches but it’s all unnecessary now. he’s stuck in a survival mode that’s actually destroying his present.
endo on the other hand strikes me as a man who knows his worth as a player which is why his wins come so naturally. marty feels the need to lie cheat and manipulate because he doesn’t believe he can get anywhere through hard work or dedication. marty worked hard at making everyone else’s life hard but refused to put that energy into the things that would make him truly successful for the things he wanted to achieve. he’s afraid that if he puts his all into something and still fails he’ll be destroyed so he hacks the system instead. hurting others is an active choice he makes. he puts every ounce of energy into the hustle while never nurturing anything else in his life which is why he ends up in a place where he is left with nothing. no house no friends no outlet no way to financially support his child. no way out.
i actually think endo let marty win on purpose. as i watched the film i immediately thought it was a mercy win. marty looked beyond desperate and a man like endo who knows his worth doesn’t need to win every single game to know who he is. just like mr rockwell said marty is stuck and he always will be. no amount of hustling will get him anywhere unless he makes an active choice to use what he learned to build a better life. our opportunities and choices shape us but what we do with them makes or breaks our state of being.
the whole theme is about gripping so hard onto the one thing you want that you sabotage your entire life to get it. the unnatural flow of certain things we try to force is exactly why they slip out of our hands in the first place they were never meant to be ours. the end of the movie had meaning. will he stay or go? it doesn't matter because no matter what he does the consequences of his actions will follow him. anyone who thinks marty actually won anything at the end is crazy.
my distain for marty mauser’s character does not align with my views of the film itself. i thought the film was beautifully made and a very captivating portrayal of how self sabotage shows up in the real world and how our own misery can negatively impact those around us, whether we’re conscious of it or not. marty could’ve chose differently, he could’ve chose differently from what he already practiced to truly make his dream come to fruition. but our own fear of change is what keeps us stuck in loops of self destruction and i think marty’s character was an amazing demonstration of that. are we like marty? do we see ourselves in marty?
