We haven't put on a show in a while. We used to be maniacs with throwing shit. Lets start that up again ya? If yalls have any suggestions on who you would like to see play a Black Sheep show, or if you're interested yourself, give us a shout.

This was a really exciting week.  I had heard a rumor from a couple different people that somewhere out in the rolling farmlands that surround my town there was a family who had built a music venue on their property.  I heard stories about how they have a huge barn and that bands come through and play there, mostly in the summer.

I had put it on my list to go and find out who these people are and to check out their venue, but I just assumed that I'd have to delay gratification until warmer months.  Crazy thing though, a friend sent me an invitation on Facebook to attend a show hosted by this same couple in their basement.  Well, the show was on Thursday, and I wasn't gonna miss it for anything.

The venue was amazing.  The family had decked out their basement with couches, tables, a bar, a pool table and a stage.  It was slick and cozy and the company was welcoming.  The show was intimate, maybe 25 people, and i got to talk with a lot of really interesting souls.  I made contacts with library supporters and artists from other small towns in the area.  I also made what I think is going to be a very valuable connection with a restaurant owner in a town about 30 minutes away from me.

See, one of my goals for the summer is to install a community garden on a patch of land in back of the library.  The obvious community connections here are the University Extension Office and the local horticultural group, but the larger idea is to get people who live in the town and don't otherwise garden to take part.  The big question with community gardens, once you get past the volunteer force, is what to do with the produce.  Well, my thought was that we should throw at least one totally free restaurant--a "Free-staurant."  (I always was a sucker for the port manteau.  You could also call it a "fresh-taurant" since all the produce will be fresh! heehee!)

Anyhoo, the garden is something that is TOTALLY doable--mostly because (having done one before) I've got a realistic idea of how much work is involved, how to get volunteers, and how much work to expect from them.  The restaurant thing, though, is new for me.  Enter the restaurant owner from the show.  I told him my idea and he was SUPER PSYCHED--not just about the "free/fresh-staurant," but also about the idea of getting fresh, locally-grown produce to make stuff with.  His specialty is pizza, and he is crazy for that most favorite of summer crops, the tomato.  Anyway, like all ideas, there are a lot of details to be hashed out, but I have a really good feeling about this one.

The show itself was an unexpected delight, as well.  My friend had booked an act there called Sandman: The Rappin' Cowboy.  His is the video that I posted here.  Sandman, or Chris Sand, is an amazing performer.  Humble and funny, his songs have an honesty that will stir you to love him immediately.  He's smart and clever but also unassuming and his style moves from rap to county to cowboy poetry to beat boxing to the sweet and silly.  I'll post another clip I could find of him in a second.  I'm kicking myself that I didn't bring a recorder or camera to this show.  It's a mistake I won't make again!
