I have never made any pretense that the expensive nature of my costumes is anything other than /very expensive/. It costs me time and money to make, plus I also have to pay taxes on the sale, taxes on my income from the sale as well as cover any wear any tear on my machines and consumable parts (needles, blades.) For a made-to-measure I also draft everything to size based on my own original patterns I researched and developed myself. - - However: costumes are not something exclusive to me, let alone Inuyasha costumes. There are other fantastic builders out there. Hell, they are something that you can make yourself! That's the beauty of cosplay! - - When someone looks into buying a costume (especially from a small business/workshop) they aren't just going to pay for the costume. They are paying for your experience, your labor, the touches that make it a costume made by you. - - Buying a costume is buying a luxury item. Something nonessential to life. Something for fun. By pricing my costumes at the price that I have, I have put a price on my time, my skills and my tools. When making patterns, I typically like to use reasonably heavy paper so that they will last...but I am also an advocate for using 'Whatever Will Work', in the case for this ten foot long pattern piece, it happens to be red wrapping paper with a grid on the backside.
