I don't think Star was originally intended as an actual theme for Chara, but I really love it as a non-canon fantheme. Partly because I feel like it's one of a small handful of songs that could fit the True Pacifist Route flashbacks and the No Mercy speech equally well. A lot of people have pointed out how it sounds kind of similar to His Theme, making the two songs match each other well. But as for that other route, the echoing sounds of the notes and the minimalist musical instruments just give it this...empty, lonely, almost creepy vibe, particularly if one kept it as just the melody and removed the harmony.
Chara's a very divisive character, but I think we can all agree they enjoyed being perceived as a little creepy and offputting, and were probably pretty lonely. And Star just feels like it fits those emotions.
I also kind of like how the melody is just. As I said, so short and minimalist. We really know so little of Chara. Asriel is an incredibly biased source, and regardless of whose idea No Mercy was or why, at the end the end of the No Mercy Route Chara is undoubtedly affected by that much LV. At least a little.
So it feels. Fitting? That a character we know so little about, and that everyone inevitably ends up projecting onto to varying degrees, also has a very short theme. Maybe it represents how Chara's dead and can no longer speak for themself to tell us who they were. Or maybe I could piece together some kind of analysis about how the short repetitive melody could represent Asriel's obsession over his best friend, warping them into something unrecognized and idealized.
Or maybe in overanalyzing a song I don't even believe was meant to be Chara's theme, I too am projecting my feelings about them onto something unrelated.
“Perhaps his only thought now, as he sat alone with them, was to tell these stars little rocks with a tiny bit of shine could grant miracles too.”
