Monster souls and bodies work differently from the original Undertale universe.

Monster's physical forms will be highly affected depending on the quality and hardness of the gem magic they are able to use. Some monsters will be more frail while others will have a higher resistance to damage aka 'higher defense'.

When a monster's physical form gets severely damaged, this damage reflects on their souls, starting to cause cracks that are not able to be healed by magic. Their bodies also do not respond well to healing magic, and the only way they have found to close some wounds is by 'welding' them with their own magic. Especially in skeletons, it's easier to notice how the cracks on their bones can be sealed with gems, but this does not mean they do not feel pain or it doesn't cause them mobility issues.

Once a soul is shattered, the monster will end up dusting, but instead of dust, it will look like crushed crystals.
