Whooooooo!! Been working on this for a few days and it's finally done! I love Unfezant, it's one of my favorite Pokemon, I really enjoyed drawing these guys c:
So the Pokemon Nuzlocke Comic Discord that I'm in is hosting an art study group, and the first 'assignment' for those participating was to draw a fully colored piece with characters and a background, utilizing whatever your current skill-set is. The goal is to then redraw this same piece at the end of the year and see how we've improved.
Atm my skill-set basically comprises of:
Clean lineart (sometimes colored or tinted) Flat colors, no shading Pretty decent at painting clouds and sometimes okay at painting environments
Before this piece, my best works were probably these two- https://www.deviantart.com/iron-zing/art/Biohazardia-dragon-sona-commission-751832627 https://www.deviantart.com/iron-zing/art/Wings-of-Fire-Commission-Lacuna-738580539
Both of those were done with the same approach, but I wanted to try something MORE with this piece, something a step above what I usually end on. To do that I tried a few things. So at first I colored the birds with their game colors, straight from the anime art. But they didn't look like they were actually in the scene. To fix that, I color picked each color, turned the opacity of my brush down to about 40%, and made a short brush stroke over the pink sky. Then I color picked THAT color and used it for the birds. By doing that I was able to keep the colors close to their actual look but still fit in the scene
I'm a big dumb dumb with colors so figuring out that's a good way to pick colors was like a eureka moment for me XD;
I also tried adding some effects to this piece. I have never tried blur or chromatic abrasion before, normally I don't do any kind of effects. I just ink and color a piece and then I am done. But those effects really added a lot to the piece I think, they helped it from looking to flat.I'll upload a version of the piece without effects to show the difference. https://www.deviantart.com/iron-zing/art/Unfezant-No-Effects-827061902
Anyways overall I'm pretty excited with how this came out! I tried a lot of new stuff and really pushed myself. I want to develop a style that is like Mamoru Hosoda's- where the backgrounds are fully shaded and detailed but the characters themselves just have flat colors, sometimes with overlay effects to help them fit into the scene. I think that if he can make entire movies look GORGEOUS with a style like that, I should be able to figure out something similar.
