Amos work ethic - meta‼️🧐
So it occurred to me that one of the only things (other physical strength) that Amos is confident about is work. And obviously this is the reason he has such a strong respect for Naomi, as she was his boss on the Canterbury.
He likes working. He enjoys fixing things, enjoys a challenge or puzzle. His confidence is staggeringly high when it comes to mechanical ⚙️ solutions. He digs deep, he isn’t timid and he makes breaks throughs under a lot of very stressful situations. Amos thinks outside the box for solutions. He isn’t limited by conventional thinking.
{Some favorite examples where his intellect is superior to his brawn: He makes emergency repairs to the Roci during the Thoth raid, space walks on the outside of Tycho station to thwart the coup against Fred Johnson and figures out how to repair a space shuttle to get off the mudball.}
And then it occurred to me that although he often checks out of a conversation when it gets difficult, it isn’t because of the topic or the person. It’s because there is NOTHING for him to solve.
Sure, he struggles with body language, social norms and general interactions that others take for granted - but that isn’t what makes his “check please” face.
When Alex rants about goodwill and doing the right thing - Amos can’t do anything about that. It if after the fact. There is no problem for him to solve, so no way to help Alex; other than get someone else to listen to his rants. 😉
But with Holden - Amos sees the problem. That is the game changer. James BROADCAST EMOTIONS Holden, is struggling. And Amos has seen him consistently battling his demons while still doing his best putting everybody else first. Amos knows Holden is righteous and reckless. Holden jumps into a problem, can’t stop, won’t stop. He is a button pusher!
So, Holden seems like a problem that Amos can help with, he can contribute. And he can easily read Holden, since he isn’t nuanced and his body language isn’t subtle.
And this is a major breakthrough for them in 2x03, Static. When Amos activity engages in helping Holden through the entire episode, in any and every possible way.
(Amos also says “Captain” three times in two minutes to Miller. So, he’s getting attached. Role words are very important to Amos. Why he says “Boss” and not Naomi.)
Amos invests in supporting Holden, like working a blockage out of a busted pipe. Amos can subvert his inability to grasp human body language and translate Holden into a mechanical problem, to solve. And it makes Amos committed to fixing him, because he has changed it into a language he is confident dealing with.
And I love that about Amos.
