People really don't remark upon this but the city/country the Gaang built had an incredibly autocratic political system, one which, by Korra's time at least, seemed to be completely lacking in legitimacy among its population. You can't build up massive combined arms militaries in secret unless literally everyone hates the government so much that there's zero risk anyone will report anything.

There's a real chance that the Equalist movement had 80%+ popular support.

There's been talk of a new Avatar show set after The Legend of Korra.

People online have been speculating how the technology jump will play out--Korra was a 1920s aesthetic (with mechs), so what will the next Avatar's world be like???

But the real question on my mind if we see a more modern world is how the United Republic of Nations handles its history as an extension of the Fire Nation's imperialism. This was glossed over in Korra (outside of the opening narration going "Aang and Fire Lord Zuko turned the former colonies into the United Republic"), and the show never bothered to address (or when it did, to give the arguments against it to people who you'd probably end up disagreeing with, because of course the show did), but I got to know. Are there United Republic citizens who glorify the Fire Nation's colonialism for bringing "prosperity" and technological advancement? Are there still people with Earth Kingdom ancestry lobbying for the return of their indigenous lands that were annexed into the Republic? The pilot for The Last Airbender showed the Fire Nation retrofitting an Earth Kingdom statue of a former Avatar (i.e. a monument of spiritual importance to the people of that area) into the image of Fire Lord Ozai. Are there people decrying this practice and calling for the end of Fire Nation colonial monuments and pro-colonialism people trying to justify keeping monuments of imperialism in pubilc?

So many questions that I doubt the creators will handle at all, or well enough...

thinking about how the united republic government works in the legend of korra

i'm just so curious they only ever talk to the president but obviously there have to be other people involved in actually running things

is there a legislative body? how do they pass laws? we see raiko as the sole point of contact for the military, but that actually makes sense-- a lot of democracies (including the US) have a single leader when it comes to actually making strategic decisions, but what about the other things in the government?

we also see raiko as the main person that people petition for funds-- particularly in turf wars (first example i could think of, i'm currently reading it again cause i got it for christmas) he seems to be the one who can decide where money goes without consultation with another body, and that if he refuses, there isn't anyone else that people can go to who might be able to overrule his decisions

is the president the sole ruler of the entire united republic?

the transition from the council to the president happens entirely offscreen between books one and two, and i very much wish they had spent more time on it-- a single election does not necessarily make a free and fair democracy (especially if there aren't very many checks on the power of the elected leaders) -- there are lots of pathways that could be used to secure power unfairly even when facing a relatively fair election

Because I'm a nerd I'm gonna share the flag I designed for the United Republic of Nations in Legend of Korra.

So, it's divided into four quadrants, each representing one of the four nations. Going clockwise from the top left, it goes in the order of the Avatar Cycle. Red represents fire, white represents air, blue represents water, and green represents earth.

I chose white to represent air because choosing yellow (which the Air Nomads often wear) would make it look too much like the Windows logo, and I thought orange (the other color they often wear) was too similar to red and would be hard to distinguish. Also, white is the color of clouds, which, though made of water, float in the sky, which is the Air Nomads' domain. Sky bison are also an off-white color. :)

I also tried to keep air and water on the end away from the flagpole, as they are more fluid and should be flying free.

The symbol in the middle of it seems to be the seal of the United Republic, or some kind of symbol that represents it. It can be seen in pin form on the Council Member's clothes in season 1 (most often on Tenzin, who has the most screen time), and on President Raiko's lapel in seasons 2-4. I thought it would make the flag look more distinguished than just four squares sewn together.

The ratio is 2:3, which is a common ratio for flags in Asia (and actually the most common in the world).

Do you guys think that Sokka was already chief of the swt when the Yakone trial took place? I know that he’s on the council for Republic City, representing the stw. So with that said, would he be able to do both? Personally I don’t see why not but I just wasn’t sure. Would like someone else’s opinion/input
