when a company offers a "compromise", look at it like that's what they were implementing in the first place.
chances are, the company is trojan horsing its userbase - giving them a shit deal and then presenting them with a better one when the backlash starts to come in. The deal will be better, but NOT good. do not fall for this tactic
The thing is even if Unity walk this back (there's a lot of talk about how they're possibly proposing this clearly attrocious policy as a PR wedge so they can walk it back and implement a moderately less stupid policy and have it be a relief rather than massively controversial) anyoen considering doing work on a significant game project will remember this and the fact at any time unity CAN make assinine monetisation changes and think "well do I want to commit to 5 year project in this engine I now don't trust?" then use Unreal instead like, goddamn the trust thermocline has never been more steeply melted.

You see, the reason why Unity removed the TOS GitHub repo was because enough of us weren’t looking at it. They are disappointed in us, because they had to take down a free GitHub repo because it was underutilized, and now the big meanies on the internet are accusing them of being scummy.
It’s on us, you guys.
We need to be very sowwy.

They are keeping the fee, for games that make over a million bucks in revenue within a given 12 months.
Unity Personal will not have a fee requirement, and they’re removing the splash screen requirement, and they’re increasing the eligibility cap to $200,000 yearly.
For games where the fee is applicable, they are going to charge the less of either a fee per new user, or a 2.5% revenue share. The numbers will be self-reported by the studios.
They are confirming that this will only apply to new games being started now, or games upgraded to use the newest editor and engine.
The Unity thing is kinda ironic. Poetically. Bitterly.
Unity is what it is today (or, was, as of Sept 11) because of some very good business decisions early on. Decisions that ensured its place at the top.
And a single horrific business decision is what’s gonna topple it.
