UNKNOWN, the series...
When I tell you every fucking piece of artifact in that bedroom came to life to enjoy the event of Yuan and Qian fuckin'.... When I tell you the sweater/shirt were happy they were being stretched the fuck out relieved from the anxiety of not knowing if they're about to get laid in this moment. The room door was screamin' cause it wasn't a fake check up knock at the door but bodies pressed against it. I swear I heard the doorknob fucking gasp cause Yuan forget to lock it... Li Li come look what your brothers are doing. This Ninja Yuan said I waited all my life for this day... The thirst so real he undressed himself... YEETED Qian motherfuckin' glasses across the room and gave it a concussion. Undressed Qian like he was the baby cause tonight he's gettin' it in. He had the lamp howlin' cause it's all on display, no more darkness... everything is in the light tonight. Had the quintessential BL checker sheets praising them for finally being used right for the first time... no more bullshit fever or fever dream wetness... the correct moisture that's taken years is properly being supplied. Do you hear me. Even the fucking curtains were smiling like Casper The Friendly Ghost that they couldn't even move. All of them up in that room like Beauty and the Beast characters... Meanwhile the age height beam downstairs vexed as fuck it couldn't partake in this visionary beauty just the confession... but it's a team player cause it's holding that second story up for this long overdue escapade... Woooiiii.... Chris Chiu and Kurt Huang take a bow.

I have watched the first two episodes of this drama and this is, hands down, the best bl I have seen out of Taiwan in years. The creators have a firm grasp on the story they are telling, the characters are extremely well drawn, the relationships are compelling, and the production is strong enough to support the narrative. The show is based on a novel by Priest, and the confidence in the writing is evident.
That said, I cannot give a blanket recommendation for folks to pick this show up. For one, it’s centered on a romance between (essentially) adoptive brothers. So right out of the gate, if that trope is a no go for you, you will not like this. The family bond is very real and I expect it to be a very real complication.
On top of that, this show is quite dark. Our little family have survived some very rough childhoods. CWs for the first two episodes alone: child abuse, including CSA, child abandonment, homelessness, poverty, gang violence, blood, PTSD. If you decide to watch, please know that some of the content is truly upsetting. Please take care and know your limits.
Priest has a pretty strong track record with writing complex trauma and nuanced family dynamics so I am inclined to believe this has a strong chance of holding up, assuming the adaptation remains solid. All caveats above aside, I’m excited to have another strong Taiwanese drama to sink my teeth into.
I wish we got the grandma and other side characters in the show. There is so much that makes Da Ge work, and most of it is completely left out. So much development relied on those characters that weren't even mentioned. Also, the timeline was slightly altered, and I just wish they would have given us 24 hour long episodes and truly conveyed the story because it is a masterpiece.
I'm not judging the show because I loved it, but I just wish they gave us more. The cast is phenomenal and could have done so well conveying the nuances.

*An old entry in my journal from earlier this year when I handled my 'what i watch' journal manually. Although the review is brief and somewhat lacking in hindsight, I want this to be a part of my record here.*

Man! What a series! What. A. Series. The acting was just so damn good. The drawn out moments, the angst, the struggles, the fluff, the humor. Everything was absolute perfection. It was so easy to empathize with the characters. And man, the cinematography! The direction! The small details and the big details. Goddamn. I absolutely loved how the outfits of the characters kept repeating. Finally a series that understands that people do not wear new clothes every day. Definitely a comfort series. I can already see multiple rewatches coming in the future.
Overall, 10/10.
