I have to say, what gives in your opinion about Code Name Verity? I’m genuinely curious. I love it myself, but I am aware of a number of potential reasons that could be dealbreakers for other folk.

It’s been years, it’s very out of order, and I think I’ve tried to block some things out, so don’t trust me for details, but my impressions have survived. Under cut for spoilers.

To start with, I didn’t like the narration style or the narrator. I understand the telling of the story in the layers was an intentional choice, but it infuriated me to no end. Queenie’s glib style of telling also annoyed me - I didn’t like her narrative voice. Julie also frustrated me, though to a slightly lesser extent - when I got to Julie stating that she was a mechanic and loved getting her hands dirty on engines and didn’t like girly things, I wanted to throw something. (I’m incredibly tired of that being the primary female engineering stereotype.)

Given the harsh conditions and the huge death toll amongst the French Resistance, I completely understood why someone appearing to cooperate with the Gestapo would be ostracized by the Resistance and other agents who were surviving torture without breaking. I also thought Julie losing it at the others they had rescued was uncalled for - Queenie very intentionally cultivated the impression of cooperating with the Gestapo; the Resistance could not afford anyone to cooperate. Entire cells and routes and networks could and were taken down because one person cooperated or gave in - Queenie is actually very fortunate to have survived the prison; in reflection, I’m a little surprised no one tried to kill her for cooperating...

Queenie dehumanizing the female Gestapo officer bugged me too. I think it was a coping mechanism, but it still got to me - if she’s supposed to be the ‘good guy’, then why...

Queenie also not actually being executed bugged me too, BECAUSE it (and pretty much every “surprise/twist” in the story) felt more like a “Gotcha!” moment on the part of the author than a “Aha!” moment on the part of the reader. (See MWT for comparison.)

AND THEN JULIE JUST STRAIGHT UP AND SHOOTS QUEENIE. That was the breaking point for me - I don’t remember exactly why they decided to stop trying to release the prisoners, BUT YOU STILL DON’T SHOOT SOMEONE BECAUSE YOU CAN’T RESCUE THEM THEN, ESPECIALLY NOT YOUR BEST FRIEND. It came down to being a supposed-mercy-killing, but it didn’t even have the pretense of “she is physically dying and there is nothing we can do to stop it at all” - she still could have survived and lived and Julie had no right to make that decision (I take issue with Queenie asking for it, but her moment of weakness there is much more understandable).

Also - and this is hard to define - in having done more reading about real people who fought in the French Resistance, who went through Gestapo interrogation and torture, and who lived and died and survived in the concentration camps for their work (much less their religion and ethnicity or race), the fictional story completely rubs me wrong. There are so many fascinating and heartbreaking stories out there, why write/read this one which throws shame at the agents who didn’t break and who had to cut off/destroy the people who did break, and promotes suicide by proxy?

But everyone still promotes it for a great WWII and friendship story and some sort of apex of female friendship...but why does it end with one friend killing the other then?
