Baldr could no more move in those strong hands than he could look away from the mesmorising eyes. Try as he might, try to break away from the shadow that cloaked his footsteps through every moment of his life, Death held a grip too tight for him to be free of, and now was no different. Had his heart not been struck true and still lived, perhaps it would have quickened in fear as the cool lips traced over the stag’s jaw, flicking tongue hissing victory as the once-god flinched.

But the serpent had hold of the hart’s weak body, and it constricted to bring Baldr closer to those fangs, where mistletoe venom had dripped through an arrow wounded and proclaimed him a corpse. And, oh, that snake cherished him, all that was once light and grace. Those leathery scales had seen too much darkness in Hade’s kingdom, and that mouth had drunk only the Styx’s poisonous water for far too long. Now here stood the sun in Death’s very hands, an eternity of rich wine to savour as he will, it was a kiss of most longing that raked Baldr’s skin.

A Different Boatman, A Different Shore | Hades and Victarion

Finally, land in sight once more, Victarion thought as he descried the Isle of Cedars.  The autumn storm in the Stepstones had wracked the Iron Fleet, and behind his Iron Victory, Victarion could only see twenty-two ships sailing sadly in the hot winds.  This is pitiful, Victarion growled to himself, if this is all that will return, my mission is all but over.  As they made landfall, they were greeted by the chattering and shit-slinging from a troupe of monkeys.  Victarion whispered a quiet curse to the Storm God and walked the strand by himself, to get the lay of the land.  Suddenly, he realized that the screaming primates had fallen silent around him, and he looked into the inland forest to see a tall man walk out.  That cannot be one of my crew... "Who are you, stranger," Victarion called, feeling a strange pit in his stomach, "how many people dwell on this island?"
