Thoughts that I’ve had while watching Untouchable Lovers (I watched during my Tumblr hiatus after wanting some idol-esq historical drama and I’m still not sure if that was a good life plan or not).
What is the point of the first 17 episodes? Look Yu Zheng, I don’t expect much from you plot wise (although I will admit that I actually really liked Palace because Boys Over Flowers actually made way more sense in a historical context), but can you at least link your show together?
Episodes 18 and on — I kinda love but wish it was better executed? In a really this is not well written but it’s written for my Id kind of way? I mean, look, I love the general plot of a feisty/plucky heroine melting the heart of a cold, calculated male lead. So, yes, which brings me to my third point.
The casting is a...choice. Look, I will fully admit that SWL is extremely handsome in a way that makes me feel like a dirty old lady. But he was too young for the role. I don’t think Guan Xiaotong was a bad choice as Chuyu, but Zhang Zhehan of Yunxi who was a Huanyu actor at the time would have been a slightly better choice? But also 摄政王 should not be a goddamn 20 years old.
The love triangle was weird. Very Goodbye My Princess but with more scheming. And I don’t know if it worked that well? I tend to like these love triangles when the female lead isn’t the official wife (I.e., Singing in the Rain), or in the case of say, Glory of Tang Dynasty, when Jingyao actually brought things to the table that Zhenzhu did not. Ultimately the issue was that the resolution was kind of a whimper? Like what was the point of the love triangle?
Which brings me to my last point: WAY TO BURY THE LEAD SHOW. If the whole point was that Chuyu had to be sacrificed for Rongzhi to gain the throne or 天下 and that’s the ultimate source of the conflict, please don’t wait until episode 46 or something to bring it up. And look, I’m not saying that I’m of a sucker for male lead giving up the throne for woman he loves — I grew up on Huan Zhu Ge Ge — but if that’s the central conflict every episode should reflect that?
