They call you Leech — a journalist with too much nerve and not enough self-preservation. You dig where no one else will. You expose what gets others buried. In Sordia, that makes you a target. Some respect you. Most want your throat cut.
You thought you'd seen the worst the city could offer until your estranged sister crashes back into your life, dropping a mystery in your lap: Twelve photos. Twelve people. And you're in one of them.
Two people in those photos already went missing. No ransom, no trails, no bodies and no answers.
Now you're caught in a story you didn't ask for, but you'll follow it to the bitter end anyway.
Try not to run out of time to figure out who's collecting names… before yours is crossed out too.
Centuries ago, there were myths about supernatural beings roaming through this world. Now, their descendants walk the streets. There are eleven main Bloodlines: Primordial, Umbra, Draegon, Seraph, Infernal, Fae, Abyssal, Ifrit, Manitou, Chronos and Chimaera.
The power runs in the blood. Not gods. Not monsters(?) Just a little more. Their abilities make them stronger, richer, deadlier but not untouchable.
In Sordia, a decaying metropolis built on the bones of old New York, humans and the powerful bloodborns coexist — barely. It's a city where humans fight Bloodlines, and Bloodlines devour each other for control. Violence is routine, loyalty is rare, and everyone bleeds the same in the end. At the top sit the Twenty-Three Families, the ruling mix of old blood and old money. They own the precincts, the papers, and the people.
The law? Corrupt. The faiths? Weaponized. The truth? Up for auction. And you?
You're just one more soul with a heartbeat, following blood trails with a camera, digging up what should've stayed buried.
Welcome to Sordia. The city's rotten to the core. Try not to catch it.
꙰ Play as a human Journalist and customize your looks, gender, pronouns, sexuality etc.
꙰ Form deep, messy, or dangerous connections. Romance is optional but sometimes survival depends on who you trust (*cough*or betray).
꙰ Are you more respected, or loathed? Your choices will shape how the Sordia treats you... and how you survive in it.
꙰ Print the truth no matter the cost or bury it for the right price. You decide where the line is, and how often you cross it.
꙰ Choose your career background — investigative journalist, tabloid reporter, war correspondent or whistleblower. Each path offers unique advantages... and setbacks.
꙰ Human or not, blood still spills. Sordia's streets are dangerous, and your choices can mean life, death, or something worse.
Maud (female | Umbra Bloodline) Your estranged younger sister, and a walking disaster you can't quite let go of. Maud only shows up whenever she wants and never when you're ready. She's been off the grid for years now, you have no idea where she's been or what she's done.
Benedict ''Ben'' (male | Human) Your uncle, and one of the few people who's never lied to you. Ben tried to raise you and Maud the best he could, but Sordia eats good men fast. Now he doesn't leave his apartment, not ever. He handles your digital back-end. Cameras, firewalls, encrypted archives, you name it, he's cracking it. Ben's not made for this place. But without him, you'd be dead ten times over.
Andre/Anaya ''Ace'' Reid (male / female | Human RO) Your best friend, your backup, and one of the few people left who'll pick up the phone when your name flashes on it. Ace works for the CRD, the folks who handle everything criminally bloodline related. Some say they're too good for Sordia. You're just hoping the city doesn't eat them next.
Dr. Arden (male / female | Manitou Bloodline RO) Dr. Arden runs a neutral clinic in the undercity, patching up anyone who can crawl through the door. They're blunt, cold, and don't care who you are, only how bad you're bleeding. They don't take sides, don't make friends, and don't ask questions. But if you're dying, they're your last best chance.
Egon/ Emme Han (male / female | Draegon Bloodline RO) Heir to one of the most powerful Draegon families in the city, and the youngest CFO to ever make the top board. Sharp suit, sharper tongue. Egon/Emme moves through the world like it owes them something, and maybe it does. They're arrogant, calculating, and impossible to impress.
Lucian/Lucia ''Luz'' (male / female | Infernal Bloodline RO) A crime boss with too much charm and not nearly enough mercy. Luz runs their empire with a grin, a drink in hand, and pink-tinted shades. No one really knows where they came from. All anyone knows is: you don't cross them, and you don't ever mistake their smile for kindness.
The Vethkai were monsters. Every child in Valdreyn knows this. They ruled for three centuries with blood and terror, and when the kingdom finally burned them out, it took everything it had. The ones who survived fled, hid, or died quietly in the years that followed. The wound they left is still open. Everyone agrees it is safer that way.
Everyone agrees there are none of them left.
There are two.
A sibling separated by fire and desperation, older and alone, who has spent years learning how to look like someone the world will not kill on sight — and how to use that. Someone patient, observant, and more dangerous than they appear, crossing a kingdom on a mission they cannot tell anyone the truth about.
And a sibling taken young, forged in an underground arena by years of training and alliance and the particular cruelty of bonds that were never meant to survive — who is about to win a throne they were never supposed to sit on.
They carry the same curse in their blood. The same history in their bones. The same fear of what they might become if they stop fighting it.
They have not seen each other in years.
They are running out of time.
The Siblings
Both siblings are Vethkai, raised in hiding after their parents were killed in the aftermath of the Ashfall Revolt. Their parents concealed their bloodline for years, living as ordinary people in a village in the western marshes. When the concealment failed, their parents died buying them time to run. The siblings were separated in the chaos — the Elder escaping into the wilderness, the Younger taken by Conclave Seekers who recognized potential in them without knowing what they truly were.
Both carry the Kaimark, not yet fully awakened in either. The Younger's is being drawn out by the pressure of the Conclave. The Elder's is being suppressed — barely — by willpower and need.
Both know what they are. Both are terrified of it. Neither is willing to become what their ancestors were. The Kaimark does not care about their intentions.
The Elder (Player Path A) — Age 22–24
The Elder has spent years surviving alone: learning to read people, to pass as ordinary, to give someone exactly what they need before they know they need it. They are not a warrior by nature, though necessity has made them one. Their greatest and most dangerous skill is understanding people — a talent that borders on manipulation and probably crosses that line more often than they admit.
The Younger (Player Path B) — Age 18–20
The Younger was taken young enough that the Conclave is more their world than the family they left behind. They have adapted, survived, and built relationships inside the arena with full awareness of what those relationships cost. They are pragmatic in the way of someone who learned early that sentimentality has a price.
Characters
Sovan — The Idealist (Gender-selectable | Age 22 | Romance: Path A → Book 2)
Background: Human, former conscript soldier Role: Frontline fighter, de facto group leader before the Elder arrives
Sovan enlisted at seventeen — not out of loyalty to the Triumvirate but because the enlistment bonus kept their family fed through a bad winter. They stayed because leaving felt like giving up on the idea that something good could still come from being where they were. That idea died the night their commanding officer ordered a village burned for suspected Vethkai sympathy. Sovan walked away before the smoke cleared and has not stopped moving since.
They believe the new ruler of Valdreyn is a threat. They believe the Elder when the Elder says they want to change that.
Sovan is not naive. They choose to believe in people as a form of resistance — and that choice has blind spots.
Romance arc: Sovan falls slowly and practically. They show care through action before they ever find words for it — sharing rations, taking the longer watch, stepping slightly in front of the Elder without comment when something feels wrong. Available to both siblings at court.
Tessaly Vorn — The Pragmatist (Gender-selectable | Age 24 | Romance: Path A → Book 2)
Background: Half-elven, information broker and occasional fence Role: Scout, lockpick, negotiator.
Tessaly took this job for access to the Triumvirate's financial archive, which contains records that would end a specific merchant's career and close a chapter of Tessaly's life they have been trying to finish for three years.
Tessaly does not trust the Elder. They never fully do. But they recognize competence, and the Elder has it in abundance.
Romance arc: Tessaly's interest looks like professional attention — they notice what the Elder is good at, remember small things, ask questions that seem casual and are not. If the Elder starts to genuinely matter to them, Tessaly becomes slightly more guarded, which is the most honest signal they know how to give.
Mira Cael — The Wild Card (Female | Age 21 | Romance: opens Book 2 only)
Background: Human, former Conclave Candidate Role: Combat specialist — precise, fast, the most dangerous person in the group
Mira joined three weeks before the Elder arrived. She offered her sword, asked for a cut of whatever they found at the end, and has said almost nothing personal since. She is not unfriendly. She is contained. When the Conclave comes up in conversation, something in her expression closes like a shutter.
Romance note: Mira's romance is intentionally withheld from Book 1. In Book 1 she is a companion, a secret, and a bridge. Her feelings, if she has them, are not something she has access to yet. The romance opens in Book 2 for both siblings.
Corvan Ashry — The Conscience (Male | Age 20 | Romance: Path A → Book 2)
Background: Human, self-taught healer and minor scholar from a small religious community Role: Healer, emotional anchor, the one who asks the questions nobody wants to answer
Corvan grew up devoted to a minor deity of reconciliation and crossed purposes — a faith built around the idea that opposing things can both be true. He left at eighteen out of genuine curiosity: he wanted to see whether the world confirmed his faith or complicated it. So far it has been mostly the latter, which he finds interesting rather than discouraging.
He is genuinely, undefensively good. He will not lie about what he believes to make someone comfortable. He will also heal an enemy if they are bleeding in front of him, without asking who they are first.
Romance arc: Corvan is direct about his feelings in the way of someone who was never taught that feelings are dangerous. If he cares about the Elder, he says so — gently, without pressure — and waits to see what they do with that. A romance with Corvan is the Elder being offered something uncomplicated and having to decide whether they are allowed to want it. Available to both siblings at court in Book 2.
The Conclave Love Interests
These three characters begin their romance arcs exclusively on Path B with the Younger.
Lyen — (Gender-selectable | Age 19 | Romance: Path B only
Background: Human, Conclave Candidate — selected from a fishing village on the southern coast Role: The Younger's closest ally inside the arena.
Lyen arrived at the Conclave with very little — no combat training, no political education, no particular reason to have been chosen except that the Seeker who came to their village saw something in the way they moved through a crowd. They are not the strongest Candidate. They are not the cleverest. What they are is present in a way that is almost impossible to perform: they pay attention to people. Fully. Without agenda.
In the Conclave's environment — where every relationship is a calculation — Lyen is an anomaly. They form a genuine bond with the Younger not because they have decided the Younger is useful but because they actually like them. This is, in the Pits of Varek, a radical act.
Romance arc: The romance with Lyen is the gentlest thing in the Younger's path, and the most costly. It builds slowly — shared meals, conversations after training, the specific intimacy of two people who have agreed, without saying it, that they are not going to think about what happens when the arena opens.
Raeth — The Court Outsider (Gender-selectable | Age 21 | Romance: Path B → Book 2)
Background: Human, scribe's apprentice assigned to the Witnessing Gallery above the Pits Role: The Younger's window to the world outside the Conclave, and the first person to see them clearly
Raeth was assigned to the Witnessing Gallery as a junior record-keeper — transcribing training observations for the Conclave's official archive. They are thorough, quiet, and have developed the specific coping mechanism of people who witness difficult things for a living: they write everything down and feel it later.
Their job requires them to observe the Candidates without interacting with them. The rule is technically followed. The notes Raeth slides under the gallery grate to the arena floor below — small, mundane things, information about the outside world, the occasional drawing of something they thought the Younger might want to see — are not technically interaction. They have told themselves this many times.
Raeth sees the Younger from above, through iron grating, for months before they ever speak through the bars. By the time they do, Raeth already knows the Younger better than almost anyone — and the Younger has been talking to someone who asks nothing of them in return, which is a thing they did not know they needed.
Romance arc: The early romance is built on constrained intimacy — notes, whispered conversations through grating, the specific tension of two people who cannot touch and are thinking about it anyway. When the arena opens, Raeth stays in the gallery and watches. They see everything. Available to both siblings at court.
Vael — The House Ward (Gender-selectable | Age 23 | Romance: Path B → Book 2)
Background: Half-elven, ward of House Orath — raised in the Triumvirate's household as a political arrangement Role: The Younger's unexpected ally in the court above, and a source of information with its own price
Vael has lived in House Orath's estate since childhood, technically a guest, practically a hostage of the Triumvirate's internal political agreements. They are educated, observant, and have spent twenty-three years watching powerful people make decisions from close range. They know exactly how the system works and have made a careful art of being underestimated within it.
The Conclave is, for Vael, something they have watched with complicated feelings for years — not because they know the Candidates personally but because they understand exactly what the Triumvirate is trying to build with it. When they find an opportunity to make contact with one of the Candidates, they take it, partly out of genuine sympathy and partly because having a relationship with whoever wins the Conclave is the most interesting move available to them.
The calculation is real. The sympathy is also real. Vael has spent so long watching the Triumvirate that they have lost track of where their strategy ends and their actual feelings begin. The Younger is the first person in years who makes them want to know.
Contact happens through the court visits — the political theater where Triumvirate-adjacent figures are permitted to observe the Candidates. Vael uses these opportunities strategically, and then slightly beyond strategically, and then in ways they stop being able to justify to themselves as strategic.
Romance arc: Vael is the most complicated of the Path B love interests — someone whose motives the Younger cannot be entirely sure of, because Vael is not entirely sure of them either. The romance involves the Younger deciding whether trust is possible with someone shaped by the same system trying to control them. Available to both siblings at court.
Key Supporting Characters
The Triumvirate
Lord Casvor Dain (House Dain, military) — Pragmatic, cold, comfortable ordering cruelty he does not personally commit. Wants the new ruler as a controllable figurehead. Will discover he has miscalculated.
Lady Fenne Orath (House Orath, trade and taxation) — Patient, playing a very long game. She knows something about the siblings' bloodline. She has been waiting to see if it becomes useful. It will. She is also Vael's guardian, which is not a coincidence.
Aldric Voss (House Voss, judiciary and information) — The most dangerous of the three. He ordered the burning of the marshes village years ago. He does not know the Elder survived. He will find out.
Conclave Master Rethyn
An older official who has overseen three Conclaves. Not sadistic — clinical. The Conclave is a mechanism, and they are its maintenance. They have noticed something unusual about the Younger. They have not yet decided what to do with that information.
The Other Candidates (Path B)
Eight remaining Candidates beyond the three love interests:
Davan Fell (21) — Quiet, northern, has been the Younger's sparring partner for two years. Either genuinely fond of them or has decided that keeping close to the greatest threat is the smartest move.
Sariel (19) — Rarely speaks. Wins every strategy game. The other Candidates are afraid of her.
Fen (18) — Attached to the Younger with the particular fierceness of someone who has decided they are their best chance at survival.

Ethos Van Winston | he/him | 22

But after an incident that left unspoken, lingering tension between you two, he now elicits a melancholic presence. His warm side is hidden away somewhere, and you wonder if there was more than just the incident that made him change.
You weren’t the reason he changed… right?
Theodore Eaves | he/him | 24
From a young age, Theodore’s life has been defined by duty and training. He’s mature for his age and has a tendency to act like an older brother to you and the group. He’s well disciplined and stoic, rarely having time to express vulnerability. His focus on duty has left him oblivious to romantic interest, despite his admired reputation due to his looks and status. His obliviousness goes further though, for reasons that he himself hasn’t fully discovered and understood.
Will you ever get to see a vulnerable side of him, instead of just that brotherly figure?
Mattie | they/them | 19
Curious as ever, Mattie often gets themselves into trouble. But with their charming personality and resourcefulness, they’re able to get themselves out of trouble. They are playful, enjoying the work of teasing others and instigating drama to get chaotic, and hopefully flustered, reactions. Their skills and knowledge about the forest have proven him to be a good asset, but there is more to them than what meets the eye.
For someone who is so bright and playful, they can’t surely have anything to hide, right?
Yaran/Yara | Gender Selectable | 22
Nobody is sure they know who Y is. They seem ambitious, cunning, and deceiving; doing risky things to achieve their own goals at the cost of someone else’s pain. They are unpredictable, popping in and out of your group - sometimes being a guide, but other times hindering progress. Despite their ambiguity, they are charismatic and mysterious enough to leave your group intrigued. All there is to do now is truly learn who they are and what they have hidden inside.
Who is Y and can you trust them with anything, especially your life?

It was the summer of 2010 when you found Jules Hawkins by the lake.
But it didn't look like Jules Hawkins.
After all, how could it? Jules Hawkins was a god. And as you know, gods like Jules are unbreakable. If you knew anyone death couldn't touch, it was Jules.
And yet, somehow it felt like you had never seen Jules look more like them than they did, that day, dead by the lake. Plump cherry lips, now parched and blue, dirt on their perfect knees, golden hair sticking to their forehead, exquisite clothes matted and muddied, skin, ghostly pale.
Even in death, even as Jules became a child of soil and dirt and ruin, Jules managed to look like art. How could this creature of beauty be anyone else but Jules Hawkins?
A string of murders follow the passing of Jules Hawkins and in the desperation of avoiding being tangled in the web of this cold blooded murderer, you end up right in the thick of it when you find out the killer may have set their eyes on you next.
Of course, you ended up in the killer's radar. You had always been a child of misfortune, after all.

JULIAN/NE "JULES" HAWKINS. [he/him or she/her] [semi ro]
You knew Jules in the way you wish you never did. Jules is embedded into your very bones. Jules is a part of you. You wish you could escape them.
Jules may be no more for the world but they are alive and breathing in your haywire brain and they are not very kind. Not that they ever were. But the Jules that haunts you, plagues you like a disease is ruthless with their words in a way the old Jules could never be. Not to you.

CHAE WARREN. [he/him]
There are few you consider friend and Warren is one of them, alongside Sujin. He is revolution in a glass jar. A little rough around the edges, with bullet holes in his paper heart. Lately, the air becomes laced with awkwardness when its just the two of you around. You wish you weren't fairly perceptive. Perhaps that could have made you oblivious to the way Warren's adams apple bobs and his throat tightens when you are around, the way his fists clench when his tongue slips or the way he glances at you thinking you didn't notice.
Description : Sharp jaw. Medium complexion. Monolid chocolate brown eyes. Straight eyebrows. Thin pinkish lips. 5'7. Athletic figure. Short dyed dark red hair.
JESSICA HAWKINS. [she/her]
Jules' twin. You never bothered to acquaint yourself with her. She had always seemed too saintly and your mother had taught you well to stay away from that kind. Those who hide their tainted souls behind rosemary lies, platinum smiles and bright eyes stitched from sunshine. Beware of them, your mother had told you. But is that what she truly is doing? Spinning honeyed tales from saccharine lips?
You would never know. Unless you choose to. If it helps, Jules lips always quirked upwards and the crease in their brows mellowed whenever her name rolled off their tongue.
Description : Kind almond shaped brown eyes. Long, thick lashes. Bow shaped lips. Arched eyebrows. High cheekbones. Straight blonde hair, reaching her back. Pale skin. Willowy frame. 5'10.
DYLAN JEANE. [he/him]
Jules' boyfriend, Dylan. Well, ex boyfriend now. He seems to harbour a deep dislike for you. No matter how hard he denies it— the slight tensing of the muscles in his jaw always give it away.
You had always been curious about him. Jules and him were an odd pair. How could Dylan be what Jules desired? They were polar opposites. Jules was tidal waves and traditional typhoons. He is ruddy sunsets and roseate dawns. He is habit, he is routine, he is rigid, he is never changing. A sad strange kind of tragedy. Jules was anything but that. Jules was everything at once. Jules was never the same. Jules was uneven. Jules was hurricanes and tsunamis.
There is a natural downwards turn to his lips, his shoulders always a little hunched as if the burdens of life have dripped down from the ceiling and chosen to settle like dust upon his shoulders. It comes to him as naturally as breathing. The impurity of his father's gold taints him, it runs in his veins and he embraces it willfully.
