Happy Juneteenth. Meet one of my ancestors, Robert Smalls. He freed himself and his family from slavery. He is one of the main reasons African Americans were able to join the military, which paved the way for me. I did not know how much he did when I joined in 2004. He convinced Abraham Lincoln that black men are able and competent enough to fight alongside the Union Army. He also has an Army ship named after him which I tried to visit while in the middle east. More details below and online. Robert Smalls (April 5, 1839 – February 23, 1915) was an American politician, publisher, and businessman. Born into slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina, he freed himself, his crew, and their families during the American Civil War by commandeering a Confederate transport ship, CSS Planter, in Charleston harbor, on May 13, 1862, and sailing it from Confederate-controlled waters of the harbor to the U.S. blockade that surrounded it. He then piloted the ship to the Union-controlled enclave in Beaufort-Port Royal-Hilton Head area, where it became a Union warship. His example and persuasion helped convince President Abraham Lincoln to accept African-American soldiers into the Union Army. . #juneteenth #blackhistory #blackfreedom #upfromslavery #juneteenthcelebration (at Beaufort, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBpBTUaDYWv/?igshid=1jinet5mk2vnz
