HAIR

Hair, I got it.

I’ve had long hair almost my entire life. It wasn’t ever a decision, it was the easy alternative to a “style,” and  who has time for that? I’ve got other things I’d rather do instead. I’m lucky, I have pretty good hair and a lot of it. I had nothing to do with that gift, but I'm extremely grateful for it, since its made life easy. I don’t know how to “do” hair. I can barely use a brush. I should have invested heavily in the hairband and barette industry.  

When I turned 30 I'd planned to shave my head. Back then no one shaved, so by doing so, I was going to make a BIG public statement. I’m not sure what the statement was going to be exactly, but that was the plan and it was going to be BIG. However, the best laid plans went awry when I contracted malaria months earlier while traveling in East Africa. When I actually turned 30 I didn’t feel the need to prove anything any more.

At 4pm PDT I’m shaving my head.

I'm working in advance of my hair falling out from this chemo blend which according to all in the know will assuredly leave me bald. I’m cutting off what I can donate and shaving the rest. To be honest, I don’t think I have the kind of face and head that will lend itself well to baldness, but we’ll know soon enough. I was going to just get a super short cut, but in the next few days, it’s very likely that my hair will cut roots and flee from the chemo on its own, so I’m just skipping the middle step.

I really don’t know how I feel about this.

On one hand I don’t care, it’s just hair, but on the other, I become visibly a cancer victim and I fucking hate that idea. This weekend is the first time I’ve felt remotely “normal” since this whole adventure started last fall so there’s that too.

I don’t have a wig - I work from home, and I run a farm, so I am not out socializing much. The chickens couldn’t care less if I have hair, as long as they get fed. I do have scarves, and hats, and mostly will likely just be bald.  I did watch a few head wrapping videos from the pros - I have to tell you my favorite title was “Zig Zagging Your Tischel” :)

By my birthday in July, if all has gone well, chemo should be behind me and I should be able to start resuming my ‘normal’ life albeit with post chemo head. After chemo the first time, my mom had soft, tiny, poodle curly hair after chemo which was awesome. But that grew out and her normal textured hair returned.
