UrShan might be the scariest thing to ever haunt Thra’s waterways, but he was just a little guy once.

Infodump ahoy!

UrShan is the son of urSan and urLii, conceived during a one-off encounter. He was unplanned, but not entirely unexpected (they were both in the dog days of their heats) and very much welcomed and loved. 

UrSan was endlessly proud of urShan, who was affectionate and creative and clever. And such a strong swimmer, wanting to be at the water from the moment he first stuck his head out of the pouch! They had an idyllic time travelling the waterways of Thra together, until urShan was the equivalent of about five or six.

That’s when things started to get...worrying.

He developed a habit of swimming up beneath creatures -- first birds, then other animals -- floating on the surface of the water and dragging them down. He’d pull them under, let them go, repeat to his satisfaction. Find another creature, pull them under, let them go...or not let them go. UrSan, horrified, tried everything she could think of to correct this behavior -- first on her own, then by sending urShan to spend time with the Valley Urru, then by having him stay with the Gelfling in hopes that he’d learn to appreciate their fragility and brief lifespans, and eventually, when he started killing again as a teenager, with skekSa.

SkekSa was a world apart from any authority figure urShan had ever had. Unlike the Valley urru, she had no patience for his antics, and unlike the Gelfling was impossible to fool. She made it absolutely clear that if she ever caught him harming Gelfling in her waters, she’d take him out herself.

“Your mother would never forgive me, but I don’t care that much about what your mother thinks.”

UrShan never forgave her for this. 

He claimed his first formal victim, a young Podling fisher, when he was barely a young adult. And it was then that even urSan knew there was nothing else she could do for him. 

He escaped her attempts to reason with him, then restrain him, and fled into the night, disappearing into the waterways they’d once roamed side by side. She and skekSa spent days searching, but could never find him. 

Fast forward to urSai, young and burning with resentment, wandering the river miles from urSan’s home territory. UrSai, coming across what he for a moment believes to be a Landstrider calf caught in the mud, but is in fact a young urru, soaking wet, looking gaunt as death in the last of the light.

As @reikiajakoiranruohoja put it, “Robin Hood found his homicidal Little John.”

🌑 for UrShan

- Enjoys taking deceptively peaceful, half-dozing lounges in the sun. Not actual naps, though...he hates sleeping.

- The thought of someday killing a young Skeksis gets him rock hard.

- He's pretty apathetic to the existence of most people, but if he genuinely likes anyone, he likes Sai.
