President Trump blackmailing the world
It is true that a country should be able to choose where to put an embassy in another country, as long that everybody in that countries agree with it. The latest decision of USA to establish their embassy in Jerusalem should be fine for Israel government, therefore it should be no problem. Unfortunately there is. Jerusalem itself is split into areas dominated by Israel and Palestinians, and as Palestinians disagree with the future location it is not ok to establish the embassy. Not surprisingly there are a lot of people opposing this decision, to the extent of a UN vote attempting to nullify the decision.
The latest threat from president Trump to stop providing monetary aid to countries that have voted to oppose the new location of the embassy, is simply counter-productive. It almost amounts to blackmailing. Several countries have already responded that they do not bow to monetary pressures. We should remember that those countries that receive aid, in particular in the Middle East, also allow USA to operate in the area in some way or another, it’s a deal that was established by previous diplomats. USA has many resource and commercial interests with countries in the Middle East. Stopping aid, would consequently lead to USA loosing rights to explore, sell, buy, and reverse many years of established deals.
Perhaps Trump calculated that USA has got the upper hand, in the sense that if relations of a country with USA completely broke, that USA would be completely fine. True? or simply a bluff?
Regardless of the outcome, we should all remember that broken relations between countries is always bad.
Also, we still don’t know the exact reason as to why establishing the embassy in Jerusalem and not in another Israeli town, which would probably be more acceptable to everybody.
