16. One person pouting, only to have it removed by a kiss from the other person.

There was something about the way Lómion pouted that made Celebrimbor’s heart melt. He was so cute when he was frustrated—not angry, frustrated. The concentration and disapproval that lined his brow, that pushed his lower lip up...it was like he was begging to be kissed.

“You’ll fix it, I know you will,” Celebrimbor murmured, leaning down to kiss that pretty pout off his lover’s face. Lómion squeaked, the way he did when Celebrimbor surprised him, but melted into the kiss a moment later. One day, Celebrimbor vowed, he would make little kisses like this so normal that Lómion didn’t think twice about them, initiated them himself.

“You’re sweet,” Lómion whispered, and the soft smile tugging at the corners of his lips—well, that was even cuter than his pout.

15. “Was that supposed to hurt?”

The fear in Maitimo’s voice was almost enough to break Findekáno’s heart—almost. He would be strong, he would endure, because Maitimo was here, with him, alive. But it pained him to see his beloved so afraid, so vulnerable.

“No,” Findekáno lied, but he paused in massaging Maitimo’s shoulders.

“Then why did you apologize?” Maitimo asked, craning his neck to look up at him. Usually he towered over Findekáno, and Finno would relish being able to look down at him, but now, with Maitimo still bedridden...

“I just thought I might have pinched too hard,” Findekáno murmured. He placed a kiss on Maitimo’s brow. “I must be overestimating my strength.”

“You never have before.” Maitimo’s voice was quiet. “Finno, I...I can barely feel your fingers. I know my muscles are knotted all to hell, but I can’t feel it. What if...what if the feeling never comes back?”

“It will,” Findekáno promised, as much to himself as to his beloved.

“But what if—” Maitimo took a shaky breath. “What if it doesn’t? What if my legs never regain their strength, what if my left hand is too weak to wield a sword? What kind of king will I be?” He laughed bitterly. “I should let your father rule the Noldor. He has done a better job than I ever could.”

Findekáno bit his tongue, torn between his love for Maitimo and his love for his father. “It will not come to that,” he insisted. “You will recover, and I will be there every step of the way. I brought you back like this, I—”

“You did not do this to me, love,” Maitimo murmured. “None of this is your fault.”

“I cut off your hand.” Findekáno fought to hold back his tears. “That was my fault.”

“You saved my life. You brought me back to you.” Maitimo lifted his remaining hand, gently pulling one of Findekáno’s braids until his face was in kissing distance. “You are right—I will recover. I must. But, if I do not...I will still have you.”

27. “Tell me again?” Arakáno said hesitantly.

Pityo took a breath, steeling himself. This was hard enough to do without Arakáno staring at him like he’d grown a second head. (Maybe the problem was that Pityo didn’t have a second head with him; Telvo refused to have any part in what he called “romantic nonsense.”)

“I,” he said again, “would like to—to kiss you.”

Arakáno blinked. “...Really?” he asked, like he didn’t quite believe it.

Pityo resisted the urge to grab him right then and kiss the stupid expression off his face. Arakáno was such an idiot and it was ridiculous how endearing he was with his wide blue eyes and lips just barely parted in surprise.

“I wouldn’t have said it, let alone twice, if I didn’t mean it!” Pityo exclaimed. He wasn’t sure if he was angry or hurt or just incredibly anxious; it didn’t really matter, considering how astonished Arakáno was. Fucking Nolofinwions. (The thought crossed his mind that ‘fucking Nolofinwions’ was exactly the path this sort of foolishness would lead to, and that at least two of his brothers were doing that already—just not with Arakáno.)

“But no one’s ever wanted to kiss me,” Arakáno said, his voice trembling. “Do you really mean it...?”

Oh. Arakáno wasn’t making fun at Pityo’s expense—he was doubting himself.

“Will this help convince you?” Pityo asked, reaching up toward his cousin—damn it, he was nearly as tall as Maitimo and might grow taller, for all he was younger than Pityo himself—and pulling him close.

Arakáno squeaked, but kissed him back, and Pityo thought his heart would burst. Maitimo and Tyelkormo had the right idea about kissing cousins—although Pityo’s Nolofinwion was the tallest and handsomest of them all.
