Korean Ambassador
Korea Studies recently hosted a luncheon with a really distinguished speaker. Choi Young-jin, the ambassador from South Korea, came to talk about current issues and answer questions.
Ambassador Choi has had an interesting life. In his work for the UN, he was on a peace keeping mission in Cote d'Ivoire to oversee the local election in 2010. While at first he was welcomed by the sitting president, he was later threatened by him once the president lost his bid for reelection and a new president had been selected. Choi, the new president, and there staffs took shelter in the UN headquarters and waged a political war against the ex-president's attempt to seize power. Finally, Choi and the UN eroded the ex-president's support, and the country was able to transition into its new presidency.
On Japan, Choi stressed the need to overcome the past and work toward the future. However, according to him Germany was able to overcome its past after World War II because of the Christian culture of guilt. When you are guilty, you apologize and try to atone for your mistakes. Japan, on the other hand, has a Confucian culture of shame. When you are ashamed, you try to sweep the problems under the rug and pretend they never happened. Instead of solving the problems and moving on, you put skeletons in the closet which come out from time to time and only cause more problems.
Choi is a really eloquent speaker who seems to have a truly unique understanding and way of explaining the Asian situation and relations with the US that is completely understandable. I wish more of my professors were as clear in their discussion as he is!
USKI
SAIS has a lot of good connections with organizations, groups, and associations. One of the ones that I've gotten to know is the US-Korea Institute. The USKI gets a significant amount of its funding from the government of South Korea and is housed at SAIS.
The organization helps make SAIS's Korea department pretty amazing. They host speakers all throughout the semester. They host lunches and dinners. They even have a class that includes a trip to Korea to meet with officials and conduct interviews, completely funded by the institute.
A few weeks after the start of the semester, the Institute and the Korea Studies department hosted a back to school picnic for all students in Korea Studies, taking Korean language classes, in Korea club or otherwise affiliated with Korea. We drove out to somewhere in Virginia and went to the picnic area in a park beneath the shade of the trees.
Some scholars from the Institute were there with their spouses and children as well as tons of students and professors. There was an abundance of Korean barbecue and delicious food all from the generosity of the USKI.
Certainly I'm looking forward to taking that class and going to Korea!
