It's a little hard to see, but the hook dangling from the tail of the plane (hence "tailhook") grabs one of four cables crossing the runway which then stops the plane, Belowdecks, the energy of the cable is absorbed by a huge piston which then snaps the cable back once the plane comes to a stop. And the pilots make it look easy; can you imaging doing this at night? Be sure and watch this with the sound--it's much cooler. #ussgeorgewashington #carrierlanding #tailhook
