Today we pause to remember the crew of the USS Indianapolis, sunk 75 years ago on this day, July 30, 1945, by the Japanese submarine I-58. After completing a top-secret high-speed run to Tinian to deliver parts for the Little Boy atomic bomb, the USS Indianapolis was enroute to Leyte when she was torpedoed just after midnight taking approximately 300 of her crew with her to the bottom of the Philippine Sea. More than 800 survived the sinking. Four days passed before the Navy learned of the sinking when survivors were spotted by a plane on a routine patrol. When they were rescued five days after the sinking, only 316 of the ship's 1,195 crew survived dehydration, exposure, lack of food, and shark attacks. The Navy laid blame at the foot of the ship's commanding officer Captain Charles McVay. He was exonerated by an act of Congress in 2001 and the 8 remaining crew were presented with Congressional Gold Medals by Speaker Pelosi last Friday. The wreck of the USS Indianapolis was located by Paul Allen and his team in 2017 at a depth of 18,000 ft. ......... Strike eight bells and raise a glass. ......... Today is the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. After delivering parts for the Little Boy atomic bomb to Tinian island 1,195 men were aboard when she was torpedoed. Around 300 died and went down with the ship including RDM3 Walton Defoor. 890 men entered the water with only 316 surviving after five days of no water, no food, a brutal open ocean sun and of course the sharks. There are 8 remaining survivors today. Remember these men and their sacrifice. I’ll drink to all crewmen tonight.
