“Featured Creatures” for AD&D in Dragon 69, January 1983, created by Gary Gygax and illustrated by Jeff Easley:
"Ustilagor fungi appear to be brain-like growths with coral-like appendages.” They scuttle about quickly, giving them a relatively high AC, flicking out 3′ long tendrils to attack with alkaline fluid burns. They also use an innate psionic ability to project strong emotions like distrust, fear, or uncertainty to disrupt groups of prey.
Zygoms resemble clumps of mushrooms joined by a rhizome structure, sometimes found growing in soil but preferring to infect the brain and nervous systems of giant ants, rats, osquips, or the occasional small humanoid. The zygom controls an infected creature for several weeks until the host dies, then it consumes the body entirely before attaching to another.
DM: It’s coming out of its cage.
Belladonna (shadar-kai avenger): Is it doing just fine?
DM: Ayyy.
