#Repost @cruzanfoodie ・・・ Today we celebrate Emancipation Day in the US Virgin Islands to signify the day all slaves in the Danish West Indies were declared free. On July 3rd, 1848, a blow of a conch shell on that fateful morning was a sign alerting all slaves it was time to march! 🇻🇮 This striking bust I have the FREEDOM to stand next to is General Buddhoe. He led the march of over 8000+ slaves to Fort Frederick on St. Croix’s west side to take over the fort and demand their freedom. When the Governor General at the time arrived to Frederiksted and saw the crowds, he knew he had no choice but to declare freedom of all the enslaved people. 🇻🇮 We close out Virgin Islands Freedom Week on this day by honoring those that came before us who paid the ultimate price for our freedom today. With the state of today’s world as it pertains to civil rights, freedom and racial equality, we are reminded that this centuries-long battle is NOT for the faint of heart. May we look to our ancestors for guidance and strength on how to successfully navigate this road to ensure liberty and justice FOR ALL! 🇻🇮 Virgin Islanders come from a lineage of mighty people who stood proudly for what they believed in. "All unfree from the Danish West India islands are from today emancipated" Peter von Scholten While many across the United States and its Territories are preparing for the 4th of July and American Independence celebrations, today July 3rd marks a very important holiday in the US Virgin Islands – Emancipation Day. 70 years after the revolutionists in the thirteen colonies rose up from tyranny in 1776 and 14 years before the enslaved were emancipated in the United States, the enslaved on St Croix banded together and coordinated an uprising. They were the second island in the Caribbean after Haiti to demand their freedom and set the precedent for emancipation throughout the Caribbean. Often it is said that Danish Governor Peter von Scholten abolished chattel slavery. And while it is technically true, it was actually an uprising of enslaved people on July 3, 1848, that prompted him to do it much earlier than he had planned.
