Chara undertale has to be up there as one of the characters of all time like I've never seen a fandom respond so perfectly to the point the text was trying to make of taking ownership of your choices in game by emphasising exactly how far they're willing to go to distance themselves from said choices. And also judging books by it's cover in a game full of scared but decent monsters.
I don't think Chara or Frisk are involved in Deltarune at all and I don't want them to be tbh it's not their story. However even though I don't think it should happen... It would be kind of hilarious if it was revealed at the end that Chara was helping Gaster with whatever experiment is going on between the player and Kris by providing all the narration to us like they did in Undertale. Only unlike Undertale there's zero bias this time it's just regular narration and any feelings demonstrated are Kris's. Their own emotional plot has wrapped up in a whole different universe this isn't their circus or their monkeys. They're doing this purely for extra credit and love of yapping.
Chara in Undertale: The voice on the phone is my dead brother so I'm going to make the narration incredibly shaky and large for this part because this is hitting parts of my emotions I didn't even realise I still had. If you take me down to the True Lab I WILL start disassociating and then we'll all be confused what's real and what's not. If you start killing everyone I'm going to fully throw away this narration gimmick and just give you my pure unfiltered thoughts, useless or otherwise, because we're partners us against the world right Frisk?
Chara in Deltarune: Oh hey its Ralsei! Everyone give it up for Ralsei. So cute. So fluffy. Kris aka you is shivering btw there's probably a boss battle incoming. Here are some of the other characters thoughts. How do I know this? How do YOU know this? Idk. Take it or leave it I'm not getting paid enough to give a full explanation. Kris hates you? Sounds like a you problem. I'm just the objective narrator, buddy.
Still thinking of AUs where Frisk and Chara exist in Deltarune and what that might actually entail. Like imagine you're Kris and the second human you've ever met has arrived in town and sure they're a kid and you're a teenager but screw it you need to vent because your only other experience with humans is Chara "Olympic level Hater" Dreemurr.
Kris: And they were convinced ever since I joined the family that being human made me evil! Like it took them years to let down their guard! They thought eight year old me was going to stab everyone in town and kill them. That's crazy right? What kind of older sibling hates a baby that much?
Frisk:
Kris: I mean look at you, you're around eight years old and you don't feel the urge to kill anyone right?
Frisk:

One aspect I find really funny about Deltarune is it takes all the ideas fans had of Undertale that didn't actually get touched on much by the game, if at all.(Frisk vs the player, Frisk vs Chara as a corrupting force, the corruption of an innocent forcing them to go down a path they don't want) and then actually made them a large theme in Deltarune. It's like he saw all this focus from fans on something that wasn't really there and went "Here damn!" 😭.
Finally played deltarune and it was just as good as expected but also came with the anticipated consequence of awakening the part of my brain that has been obsessed with chara dreemurr for over nine years. They weren't even in the game. I saw the dreemurr family and now I can't stop thinking about chara they were just a child oh my goddddd.
OK so Chara undertale dead little ghost kid right? Wakes up at the start of the game and joins us on our adventure, narrating as we go. And the more we move through the story the more we learn that the world of monsters is the way it is due in large part to the tragic death of a human child and their adoptive monster brother years and years ago.
Chara, our little chatterbox ghost narrator, turns out to be the accidental cause for so many issues in the world of monsters, most stemming from their death. It's almost like they're....
Haunting the narrative.
Been sick these past few days so just continuing to replay Undertale and got greatly amused at the knowledge difference between a blind pacifist Frisk and a blind genocide Frisk.
Pacifist Frisk wakes up with a voice in their head and an evil flower calling them the wrong name. Which is also the name they hear in memories that aren't theirs whenever they fall unconscious or almost die. So, weird situation to start with, but whatever. They move through the underground making friends and at the end of it all the monsters helpfully explain the whole story of Asriel and the first human. Then they go to the true lab and see the tapes and at this point even if they haven't realised who the voice in their head is they know Chara's entire backstory and who Flowey is and why they keep calling Frisk the name of a dead kid.
Meanwhile genocide run Frisk with no prior resets wakes up mad as hell and decides to make it everyone's problem. Like pacifist they get a voice in their head, an evil flower calling them Chara and some of Chara's memories whenever they almost die. Unlike pacifist the semi possession doesn't just remain verbal this time. Chara takes control to walk through puzzles or attack enemies from time to time. As this is Frisk's first run they would still have no idea who the hell is semi possessing them, but the evil flower is convinced they're Chara and judging by the voice in Frisk's head, evil flower might be right.
They reach the old royal house and Chara straight up says Hi hello its me Chara and shows Frisk around their old house. So Frisk now knows who's semi possessing them and that they used to live in this house, but that's kind of... It? No monsters to explain the Asriel backstory but instead this damn evil flower pops up AGAIN and begins trauma dumping on Frisk because he still thinks they're Chara. Which you kind of are at this point but you're also Frisk so. Rude. This flower is talking a whole lot about how he and Chara used to be partners in crime in the past and how you're best friends so now Frisk now knows that a) ghost kid aka Chara lived with monsters and b) Chara was friends with an evil flower.
Then they kill the evil flower, ghost kid becomes not so chained to the inside of your head, Chara turns out to be a ridiculously powerful demon and kills Frisk.
And in this situation Frisk still doesn't know a single damn thing about Asriel, Flowey, or what their whole deal was with Chara. But this demon kid is demanding their soul in exchange for the world back so that's that I guess.
I'd love to see a fic where genocide Frisk and pacifist Frisk got a chance to talk and genocide just sits there slowly realising they convinced Chara to murder their brother who also happened to be the prince of monsters. Which also explains why Chara is the teeniest tiniest bit mad at Frisk if Frisk chooses to wimp out on destroying the world after Chara just killed their own strongest tie to it. Genocide Frisk would get their mind blown by all the lore they missed out on and pacifist Frisk would just be like sucks to suck. That's what you get for skipping out on dialogue you filthy stat maxxer.
Looking back at old undertale fandom is so funny they were like here's our protagonist a child who's only personality trait is catholic guilt. And here's the ultimate evil in the universe: another child except this one is Satan incarnate and their only desire is bloodlust. Despite every inch of this game being full of subtle characterisation moments which we've been able to use to piece together a ton of depth and lore for these skeleton boys, we're going to stick to being as one dimensional as possible towards the humans. Here's a very deep and beautiful amv about how sad the skeletons are that the evil child yandere is destroying everything for funsies. We're just going to ignore the whole metanarrative of the player's choices being an actual force that has consequences for the characters in game, don't worry about it.
