I've talked before about my fantasy that more black people would get into sailing. Many of us understand that our people are connected to the earth and the environment. And water as the source of all life is centered in that.
But another fantasy of mine is to sail, firstly back to Jamaica, and eventually across the Atlantic to the west coast of Africa. For me, learning to sail has in some ways increased my spiritual connection, or at least my longing for such, to my culture. The sail loft that shares the property where I work has a staff full of afro-caribbeans (Barbados, Tortola, Trinidad) who also have a love for sailing.
And I think it's important when talking about black history we remain mindful of the liberation of the African diaspora as a whole. By reconnecting with the sea, we can be connected to our global family. We can be connected to home.
Also I really really love this song.
