Mixup of the day: utan vs utom

Utan means without. (In old English, there was a word wiþūtan which also means without or outside of. The þ is pronounced “th”, so... withoutan?! Disclaimer: I am not a linguist, I am just trying to make a mnemonic.)

Jag tycker om pasta utan sås. I like pasta without sauce. Han smög sig fram utan att bli sedd. He crept forward without being seen.

It can also be used to say “but” in “inte x, utan y” sentence structures.

inte bara tyska utan också svenska. not just German but also Swedish. jag vill inte ha té utan mjölk. I don’t want tea, but milk.

It is also used in the word utanför to mean “outside of”.

utanför mitt fönster. outside of my window. utanför dörren. outside of the door.

Utom can be used to make an exception, usually paired with the word alla.

Alla hundarna, utom den vita. All the dogs, except the white one. Alla utom han tycker om choklad. Everyone besides him likes chocolate.

It is also used in idiom structures att vara utom sig av with a very similar meaning to the English “to be beside oneself with [negative emotion]”.

utom sig av vrede. beside oneself with rage.

And utom can also mean “outside of”, but appears to be used more abstractly. One would never say jag är utom huset instead of jag är untanför huset.... although it is correct to say jag är utomhus. Just to make things complicated. In fact, maybe we should say utom means “out of” rather than “outside of”.

utom räckhåll. out of reach. utom äktenskapet. out of marriage.
