I feel that the Army should double as nature reserve, coast guard, firefighters and so on.

What this situation makes painfully clear is that you need a national defence, simply to deter invaders. But if you have long periods of peace, you'll still have people who simply want to fight something. I think it's an essential survival instinct. But instead of constantly having them invade others to get that aggression out, (and aggression isn't evil. It's a part of human power) and realising that there are only so many people you can employ to play professional sports at any given time, let them fight the elements. A worldwide pool of disaster relief at your fingertips. Let them fight illness. Nature has a 1000 ways it wants to kill us. Let them fight that. Especially since, with climate change, nature is upping the ante.

And I know they at times already do but I feel far too sparingly. It should simply be a government service. Because you don't want people picking fights because they're bored. Well, having been through three storms in one week, I can tell you, that's not boring.

ideal future houses

I often wonder about what kind of house we will live in, if we are lucky enough to buy one.

I love modernism, but I also love the look of classic Collegiate Gothic and the Prairie School. When I see Café Brauer at the Lincoln Park Zoo, I think I want my house to look a lot like that.

I weirdly like institutional materials, like terrazzo flooring that curves up the sides of the walls, like we had in our grade school, and things like window seats and cubbies and lots of simple, clean, built-in bookshelves. And a mix of picture and clerestory windows, skylights and deep overhangs to keep things cool in the summer.

A courtyard-esque U layout maybe with a water feature in the middle; a zen garden fountain / pond? An outbuilding studio, or separate wings for our offices / hobby spaces? (yes, luxurious.)

I kinda like the aesthetic of a corner store for the kitchen. A couple of those 55" sliding-door glass merchandiser fridges, maybe a display rack and pegboard hooks for snacks and candy. A small magazine stand, even. A wall of pegboard hooks for pots and pans and drawers with holders for lid storage. A nice, wide 5-burner induction range, dual wall ovens (those kind from the Baking Show with the slide-under doors).

Instead of a trendy overhang kitchen island counter with stools, keep that slightly separated, but use something more like a diner booth, complete with little jukebox selector and that little holder for ketchup, mustard, vinegar and napkins. It could be semi-modular, with storage underneath, to expand to different configurations for dinner parties, but keeping things cozy.

Lots of solar, ground-source heat pump geothermal, ideally a net-zero house.

I talk about minimum income a lot but it's not enough. Yeah people won't want to work at your depressing jobs constructed to be as depressing as possible possibly. But all jobs can be made fun and rewarding with effort. People need a place to go to where they help them achieve their dream with all the practical knowledge of humanity there, or assign you land to use. You can do everything you want with land. Basic income can make sure no one is homeless or starving, and make everyone's lives a little better but it doesn't fix this dystopia, where no one talks to each other. Much more is needed, like a "The Free Games". Games that are fun physical exercise not just drinking at a bar, and dancing, (more coffee) but fun intellectual games as well that force strangers to talk to each other with a context other than physical appearance. Which is embarrassing. Games of building and activism, games of gardening open to all anytime that don't have a waiting list. unseen computerized matching your best friends. Something to break the ice solidly formed around our civilization.

I want cities to be given a certain personality group. Kinda like the faction in "Divergent" except that you can move between cities when you want to. That way kids who go to school together can have similar interests. Like the "anime city" can have a school that the children who like anime can all be friends and talk about their fave anime and like there can be a city wide convention and everyone pretty much chill w each other. And there can be a separate school for those not so interested in anime that's kinda like the everything school so the kids who don't like anime don't know what they wanna to or what they like, they can learn about it and figure it out. Of course if a family moves because they lose interest or because they can't find work in the city of their choice they could go to another city they only like the interest of a little and they won't be miserable because the parents find a job and it's decent but not bad and the children if they don't like the interest of the specific school they can go to the everything school and if they already know what they like, they can be in that school's interest group for what they like and still be around the people with same interests. The only problems I see with this are that the parents would have to settle for something mediocre and the everything school might become known as the lesser school. What do you think?
