I’m not a good artist but fuck it I’m an awesome-ass writer and it’s real fucking shitty that, outside of fandom, fic writers are spat on and artists are upheld as nearly holy.

Then there’s the problem of gender. Male fanartists are lauded for their skills; female fanartists are insulted, threatened, looked down on (ask any well-known woman artist and she’ll tell you it’s true). Female fic writers are everywhere in all the fandoms I’ve been part of, but where are my bros? Where are my fellow male writers? Is it possible that fic-writing is considered so lowly that men just don’t bother? It’s just a pastime for silly young girls? What about the adult women who write fic? Are they somehow less just because they’ve spent years honing their writing skills through fic?

And that’s not even touching on race. Fandom is so heavily skewed, pandering to white people. The white characters get more time and effort. The white content consumers demand to be kept “safe” and comfortable in their little bubbles. The white content creators get called out no matter what they do, so they just default to what they know--pale skin. The front of Fandom is white and it’s just so shitty.

I’m too tired for more, but it is 100% god damn true that if it’s a problem in society, it’s amplified in fandom.

I started this with the intent of saying that it’s insulting and hurtful to tell a fic writer that their contributions are worthless, while telling the artist right next to them that they’re your hero. But whatever.
