I suspect one of those:

1. He was betrothed to someone else for a political allience (his is a prince, after all), but ran away so he could be whith Melinda, but never really told the team about that.

2. Merlin asked him to give what ever it was that he used to power Copernicus and Edred tried to get the thing diplomaticly at first, but was denied so he just stole some of it (that is why he knows Copernicus could be fixed there, but Alfie/Seng didn't), but since he asked first, he thinks every one knows he stole it
