Number one favorite problematic ship dynamic:

Middle-aged villainous mentor/parental figure x younger, headstrong, less villainous protegé who may or may not have actually agreed to being mentored. They are weirdly affectionate/close with each other in ways that are somewhat suspicious given the rest of their dynamic.

Over all the ways I'm so right about this and everybody was aware, including Jon and Elias themselves - the first painfully self-consicous and the second very much amused specifically because they WERE NOT, in fact, fucking.)

What if the big twist in Protocol is that Jon and Elias both exist, they're married, and Gwen's their kid. Gwen's working for the OAIR cuz Elias put her on one of his classic elaborate goose chases that involves boring desk work and disturbing misadventures.

i have no idea who gwendolyn bouchard is but i support all those posts about her being a jonelias child of divorce or whatever because in honour of hannigram and loustat i think jon and elias should have a teenage daughter (adopted, she came to the institute to give a statement and it turned into a whole thing. and yes, she gets nightmares about the archivist) - with whom one of them has an incomprehensible subtextually incestuous, abusive relationship (hannibal with abigail and lestat with claudia in amc iwtv, so yea okay it's elias who's going to be Weird with the daughter for taking up jon's time) and who tragically ends up dead sometime around her 19th birthday directly due to their actions and this causes a temporary rift between the two of them but not enough for permanent seperation because they're both fundamentally selfish people and for elias at least the daughter was always going to be second to jon because she wasn't going to give him his apocalypse, was she. also before (or directly after) she dies it's slowly revealed that she had unconscious ties to the web and this breaks jon's heart because he really thought there was this one thing of joy in his life that was not marked by the fears.

There's the obvious implication here that Jon doesn't want to be compared to Elias, the evil guy who tricked him into breaking the world.

But also the fact that he can't stand to hear Elias' name because he knows one, Helen's right and he's far more like Elias than he realized. He's now fully aware of why Elias was the way he was and to be told it's satisfying-- Jon could never let himself admit to enjoying that.

And two, I think Jon feels so fucking betrayed that hearing his name in reference to how they're alike actually hurts him.

Its so important that elias kissed Jon's lips bloody when he died. That there was a moment where their foreheads touch right before he crumbled, that Jon's hand uselessly tried, out of instinct, to hold him up, but the Eye needed its pupil, needed his attention, there was so much to know and witness - its sooo important that the last thing Elias saw was Jon, beholden and beholding, his successor, his creation, his killer, a full god, settling into the beautiful dream Elias was having a moment ago still...

The thing that appeals to me about Elias as a villain is that, if you're not on the way of his ambitions, you're fine. Sure, maybe he'll get a bit of a kick out of reminding you of that one time you embarassed yourself in front of a crowd, or something, or call you out on a white lie that nobody had ever noticed amidst a meeting just to catch you off guard, but otherwise? You're good! He'll be a bland, boring boss, seemingly not very keen to get involved in a mess even if he really should, and that's it.

The thing that appeals even MORE about Elias is that, IF you are linked in any way to his own ambitions, he might grow fond of you. Or, rather, the fact he might have to use you or hurt you, OR that you might hurt him does not change the potential for affection he might hold for you. He's a SENTIMENTAL man who, at the end of the day, is still incredibly selfish. He can both recognized he lived side by side with Gertrude for fifty years, and kill her in cold blood a moment later. He can end the world having used Peter, Martin and of course, Jon in a way that was incredibly personal and horrible AND actively wish/reassure that they might/will love it in this new world he's forcing upon them.

The definite thing that sells me on Jonelias, of course, is that for a villain that's so used to being passive, AND is known to be sentimental, there's no way in hell he doesn't love Jon by the end of the podcast. He's in too deep, investing years into ensuring and witnessing Jon's path to forced godhood. Besides which, by the end of it all, Jon could surpass all those he had loved before, by the mere fact he'll be Elias's perfect mirror and equal!!!

they share a DOMAIN. That's fucking love in the apocalypse, I'm pretty certain. Elias had carefully took the thread the web was offering him and was the one who wrapped them around his own wrist and then Jon's throat hand.

Anyway, I love him, and I love him being utterly enamoured with Jon, and I love him only losing Jon in canon because he waited too long, because he was being careful and patient and too passive again along the way waiting for their big happy ending together.

(and i love literally every and any story where Jon still loves him anyway, martin or not, apocalypse or not, etc.)
