Song of the Week! (12/8/2014)
We are Uzuhi
We play music
We want to make you hap-py
As cheesy as these lyrics might sound, I have never seen a band with such a genuine desire to please the crowd as Uzuhi. These Japanese charmers won my heart last Saturday night, playing a show at Middle East Upstairs that wasn’t as well-attended as it deserved to be.
These guys are quirky as hell, yet nothing ever felt forced, even as they demanded the crowd sit down on the floor to help them sing along to a song titled “Sweet Lovely Chocolate Smile”.
As a group, they are many things at once. Simultaneously punk rock and J-pop, aggressive and sappy, loving and demanding, Uzuhi’s live show is an emotional rollercoaster that will leave you smiling more often than not.
In honor of this past weekend being their final show in the Boston area (at least for the foreseeable future) I’m dedicating my comeback Song of the Week to this undeniably unique band. Enjoy!
