RAT TRAP BLASTMAT PUS AFTERMATH (CT) INSIDIOUS
Midway Cafe | Jamaica Plain, MA $7 | 4pm | All Ages
RSVP: here.
Boston-based mental health professional and punk rocker Craig Lewis has compiled a volume of stories of mental illness written by people involved in the punk scene, with the intention of giving a voice to those experiencing mental illness firsthand as well as some of their allies. "You're Crazy" hopes to educate the general public and in doing so reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. This is an incredibly important mission, as mental health has been and continues to be a much-ignored issue in our country.
Craig also has a website which he uses to disseminate more information and also receive submissions for future volumes of "You're Crazy". You can check that out here: http://www.punksinrecovery.com/
To purchase a copy of the book, simply follow the link above! Strongly recommended.
Related to the previous Trophy Lungs post...
Antique Records has released this video teasing its upcoming spring releases. The video features Sledding With Tigers (CA), Bobby Meader Music (NV), Trophy Lungs, Well Kept Things (NY), and Microwave (GA). Definitely some cool stuff happening over at Antique, so go buy some awesome records and support an up-and-coming local label!
Song of the Week: Trophy Lungs
This week's Song of the Week comes from Boston pop-punk actTrophy Lungs. It's called "Dad's Away on Business", and it's absolutely perfect for drinking PBR and pogo-ing to.
The group just signed to local label Antique Records, and will be releasing their first full-length album, entitled "Day Jobs", this spring.
Interesting side note: the video was filmed at Maximum Hesh skate shop in Somerville. Enjoy!
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
House of Blues Boston 12/28/14
Great shots!
We’re doing acoustic sets at Maximum Hesh skate shop in Somerville with The New Warden and Yo Ticonderoga. Mini fridge stocked with beer and kick flips off Bren’s head. Doors are at 8pm and it’s FREE so get there early!
Here's a show worth checking out:
The Radicals (Peabody MA) and The New Warden (Boston) are playing tonight at O'Brien's in Allston with a bunch of friends. The Radicals play straight-up punk rock with a gruff vocal style reminiscent of Off With Their Heads, while The New Warden play pop-punk with cleverly tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Both are awesome, and you should go see them play! You can give all the groups a listen by following the link to the Facebook event and using the Bandcamp links given.
Tickets are $8, doors open at 8 pm, and it's 21+.
44 track album
This is a really cool thing:
Kevin Bogart, a member of Boston punk band Trophy Lungs, organized this massive (44 tracks!) punk mixtape to benefit Black Lives Matter, an organization "working for a world where black lives are no longer systematically or intentionally targeted for demise". Given recent events, I don't think the importance and urgency of this issue can be overstated.
You can follow the link above to check out the album, which includes a number of Boston bands like Defeater, Choke Up, and Trophy Lungs (of course), as well as notable acts from around the country such as The Holy Mess, Elway, and Banquets. It's available as a "name your price" download, and all proceeds will go directly to Black Lives Matter. To learn more about what exactly Black Lives Matter is doing, follow this link: http://blacklivesmatter.com/
Basically, this is a great way to pick up some awesome music while supporting an important cause, so go for it!
In honor of the 17th annual Hometown Throwdown, which took place Friday night, last night, and tonight, here's a classic Mighty Mighty Bosstones track. These guys have been around much longer than I've been alive and have maintained their ideals and values since the beginning. Hopefully the Hometown Throwdown and the Bosstones will continue to live on!
Song of the Week (12/15/14)
Happy Monday folks! Apologies for the lateness of this post, I was a bit busy with a holiday party at work. You know, photocopying my butt and all that.
Umm...well there's no good segue here, but check out this jam from Boston's own Jaya the Cat. These cats walk the always fine line between anthemic and corny with this track off their 2012 full-length, The New International Sound of Hedonism. In my opinion, Here Come the Drums comes off as totally genuine and immediate, without being corny in the slightest. But decide for yourself, and enjoy!
Boston Weekend Preview! (12/12-12/14)
Time for everyone to answer the age-old question: What am I gonna do this weekend??
Never fear, for I have scoured the depths of the internet to bring you only the finest live music experiences!
Tonight
Local punk rockers OTP will be getting in the holiday spirit this evening at the Somerville Theatre with an extra-special Krampus-themed event. Also featuring The Daley Grimes (acoustic comedy) and Answerman (garage rock), the event will include raffles, prizes, and general holiday-themed merriment. But be good, or Krampus will kidnap you!
Tickets are $10, doors are at 9, and sorry kiddos, this one's 21+.
Saturday
If you're looking for something to make you laugh, look no further than the Middle East Downstairs on Saturday night, when Robby Roadsteamer makes his triumphant(?) return. A character played by local comedian Rob Potylo, Roadsteamer is a parody of a classic, but not classy, '80s headbanger. He and his backing band have given us such classics as "I Put a Baby in You" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAPMgrxnaOc). Even better, a slew of area bands will be opening for Robby including the fuzzed out stoner-punk of Zip-Tie Handcuffs and the straightforward punk-and-roll of Psychic Dog.
Tickets are $12, doors 7 pm, and 18+ only!
Uzuhi take a moment to thank Jay of Red Line Rebels and to serenade him with "Sweet Lovely Chocolate Smile". (taken at Middle East Upstairs, 12/6/14)
Song of the Week! (12/8/2014)
We are Uzuhi
We play music
We want to make you hap-py
As cheesy as these lyrics might sound, I have never seen a band with such a genuine desire to please the crowd as Uzuhi. These Japanese charmers won my heart last Saturday night, playing a show at Middle East Upstairs that wasn’t as well-attended as it deserved to be.
These guys are quirky as hell, yet nothing ever felt forced, even as they demanded the crowd sit down on the floor to help them sing along to a song titled “Sweet Lovely Chocolate Smile”.
As a group, they are many things at once. Simultaneously punk rock and J-pop, aggressive and sappy, loving and demanding, Uzuhi’s live show is an emotional rollercoaster that will leave you smiling more often than not.
In honor of this past weekend being their final show in the Boston area (at least for the foreseeable future) I’m dedicating my comeback Song of the Week to this undeniably unique band. Enjoy!
